Pilots and Tattoos

I wanna see the poor bastard that lost the bet that had to get this:

If I ever would have gotten one, it would have been of something that is meaningful that few people could understand. Example: Maybe a unit tattoo if I were in a huge fight that I barely made it out alive (fallujah comes to mind). If I did anything of substance in the military or any public service job (cop/firefighter) and had a story behind it, I might do that. Other than that, I find tattoos silly.

I don't know your career ambitions, but if you're looking at one of the top tier 121's, I would heavily suggest against this.

It's one thing to already have one, but it's something else to go out and get one.

I appreciate the advice, not only for myself but for anyone else who is reading.

However, I'm pretty happy in ATC and should anything happen that would cause a career change, it would also probably prevent me from flying professionally (loss of medical, etc).

The one thing I've NEVER heard anyone in the agency gripe about appearance-wise is tattoos. With that, just out of curiosity, is it a cultural/traditional thing for you guys?

80% of my ink is cultural. The others are time markers of different periods of my life.

I will proudly wear my navy tattoo as it is a symbol for the five years that I spent with very brave men and women defending our freedom. But I do regret on tattoo that goes all the way down to my elbow, young and dumb with that one :/

For me, they all are personal....important/significant times in my life.

I've considered getting a simple paw tattoo on my back to remind me of my lost love, and I'd openly defy anyone to challenge me on that decision.

Barring that, I'd personally have no reason to get a tattoo... the key word being 'personally'. Personally, I think most tattoos are bad ideas on a number of levels, and are almost invariably ill-considered.

But you don't know their rationale.

I'd be afraid of the upkeep. I see a lot of tats that look interesting, but I've never seen one that wasn't meticulously maintained that I'd be proud to drag around this bag of bones.

That's a good point. I had a staph infection do a number on a part of mine. Thankfully it's not too noticeable, but at some point I'm going to have to go back to the artist and have him touch it up a bit.

This. Many people get these extravagant pieces with immense detail not understanding that you should go back once a year for touch up work. Ive had mine over ten years, its still as vibrant as it was the day I got it. I credit one touch up session and keeping it out of direct sunlight. Its important to stay out of the sun with them and moisturize. I see so many people get nice tattoos only to bake in the Lake Havasu sun for a weekend using baby oil as a sun block. Nothing ruins a nice tattoo quicker then the sun. Use a high spf if you do spend a day in the sun.
