pilot shortage scam or real?

In general, with the amount of baby-boomers there are, there will be shortages in most every profession when these people start retiring, and vast increases in other things like health care. If you want to take advantage of a retirement shortage, why don't you become a doctor? A radiologist gets around 12 weeks per year off and over $500k per anum (and mine make much more) so you can buy a really cool airplane like a Staggerwing or a Waco and have plenty of time off to fly it. Every month your paycheck is enough to pay for two of the most high-quality Wright engine overhauls at around $30k apiece...so you'll have plenty of money to fly and maintain your fleet. That would be a better plan. And, just so that it comes through loud and clear: MONEY MAKES WOMEN HORNY so there's that too.

Wow sounds perfect, there's enough of these jobs for everyone?

Hey, everyone, Waco has found the promise land! Run towards the light Mary-Ann

Yeah, but fuh real, I hope nobody is really thinking aviation is the "only" thing you can do. You'll paint yourself in a corner professionally and potentially find yourself without marketable skills if (and when!) the inevitable furlough letter hits your mailbox. Also, tying your life and ambitions to flying airplanes, and only flying airplanes, is pretty miserable. Have a life and develop skills outside the cockpit.

I love flying airplanes too, but it'd be awful if that's all I did or could ever do with my life.

I'm not sure if you're trolling or not, but if you're not, then I disagree with the vast majority of the above posters who are living in Debbie Downer land. The facts all point to a clear pilot shortage in the years ahead. And to be clear, "shortage" doesn't mean that the world is coming to an end and the airlines are parking airplanes because they don't have enough pilots. It just means that getting a pilot job will be pretty damn easy and career advancement will be quick.

As far as those dismissing the idea because "they've always said that there will be a pilot shortage," well, that's because there basically was. For those who weren't flying prior to 9/11, then I can tell you, in 2000-2001, getting a job at a major wasn't exactly tough. I was a 1900 FO at the time, and every other captain I flew with had multiple job offers. A typical cockpit conversation went something like "I've got offers from Delta, American, and Continental, and I can't decide which one to take. What do you think?" It was usually about the time that the pilot had about 1000-1500 part 121 PIC. I'd call that a shortage. The numbers indicate that the next one is going to be far, far worse. Retirement numbers are astronomical for the next 20 years. This is a good time to be getting into aviation.

Sorry for interrupting the usual depression party with some optimism. Back to your regularly scheduled suicide watch.

Scam. A pilot shortage has been right around the corner for the 13 years I have been flying. Going on 7000 hours now and I am still nowhere near competitive. If anyone wanted my advice I would say to join the Air Force.

Nowhere near competitive at 7000 hours? What are you talking about? I got hired at AirTran with 5000 hour TT and only about 1400 PIC. Other guys in my seniority range at Pinnacle with the same or even less hours got hired at UAL, DAL, CAL, UPS, FDX, and SWA. That was just five years ago.
