MONTEREY, Mass. -- Federal investigations said the pilot of a private airplane that crashed in the Berkshires last year stopped briefly at a closed airport before the plane went down.
Four members of a Swanzey, N.H., family heading home from Florida were killed in the March 2003 crash, but three young boys survived the crash and a night in sub-freezing temperatures.
A report by the National Transportation Safety Board said pilot Ronald Ferris stopped for about an hour at the Great Barrington airport and was heading for an airport in Westfield when the plane smashed into a snow-covered mountain.
Ferris, his wife, Tayne, and sons, Shawn and Kyle, died in the crash.
Officials said it was unclear why Ferris stopped in Great Barrington, but one of the surviving Ferris children said he remembered landing "somewhere dark" and his father being unable to find a telephone.
