What's interesting is that the plane is registered to a guy whose a fairly well known 9/11 truther (not the pilot). That's not so much the interesting part as the fact that it wasn't registered to an LLC. Hope he has a good attorney.

I hope he has good insurance.

No silver bullet in the prelim. Carb ice is about all I could think of, but I don't know if 15-minutes is enough for it to build.

No METAR from the airport was included in the report, but I'd think that coastal Florida has pretty high humidity that could contribute to carb ice.

What to make - if anything - that the mags & fuel selector were both off, but the mixture was rich & throttle was open. And the report doesn't mention if the pilot attempted to apply carb heat after the engine began running rough (that selector was off).

Very sad story. This is one of the many reasons if I ever fly a small airplane again it will have 2 noise makers attached to it.

I fly in a very remote area with one very loud engine, day or night. The risk of operating a aircraft with no redundant systems that turns into a brick when it gets quiet is concerning to me sometimes.
