Pilot Jackets

Hey guys I'm a former lurker who has recently decided to sign up....thanks to the personal urgings by Doug Taylor himself (although I'm sure he doesn't remember haha.) Doug flew me down from Atlanta to New Orleans on one of his beautiful MD-88's. Anyway my question is about pilot jackets. I've noticed that during the summer months I never see anyone wearing them (at delta at least). Is this standard? are you guys only allowed to wear them during a certain time of year? And when you do wear them what do you do if it gets to hot. I mean you can't just ball it up and put in your bag can you?
 
For many years at Delta jackets were required to be worn year round. It was miserable and often pilots carried them on their arms when weather was very hot. Remember, Delta has double-breasted jackets.

When Jimmy Carter started his stupid deal about turning up the air conditioning and encouraging companies to let their employees work in shirt sleeves, Delta went along and gave us a couple months off from the jacket. This was so wildly popular that, inevitably, the company finally made it permanent policy a few years later. Most companies have a summer and winter uniform policy.
 
Delta's jacket (just to use Delta as an example) is a very well-made piece. It's fully lined & piped on the inside, with quilting. The nicest looking most well-made uniform jacket I've seen. (My AMR uniforms were cheap poly-blend crap.)

Because of how nice DLs jacket is, it's VERY warm & heavy, and would really suck to have to wear it in ATL in August.

We had pretty much the same time-of-year policy regarding our jackets at Eagle & AA. I was based in Chicago and New York, so we wore them in the winter regardless of what the policy was. It was cold, we needed them!

Some of us don't even have to wear jackets, some wear approved leather jackets, some wear leather jackets, some wear the Mesa windbreaker, some wear the blazer (single breasted), some wear a trenchcoat...we have winter and summer rules too, but it's really at the discretion of the individual it seems...

it wasn't always like this though...before they furloughed the mainline uniform nazi...what would he think now...

Then again, whatever you wear when the windchill is -12 is your own d%@m business

We get the choice of the blazer or leather jacket. We are supposed to wear one or the other unless it's too hot out.

Single breasted coats have a single verticle strip of buttons. Double breasts have, you guessed it, two verticle strips of buttons. Google it for a visual

wow doug, i really am shocked that you rememebred me and that specific flight. i always pictured being an airline pilot you wouldn't rememeber any specific person who questioned you about aviation.

I remember everything! Grudges, money owed, that time when Kristie wouldn't buy me a cookie at the Altamonte Springs mall in Orlando....
