Pilot is really just a dream for HK citizen

Have you ever been Hong Kong? If so, you should have been HK International airport, which has titled several awards and probably one of the best airports in the world. There is such a beautiful airport in HK but the aviation industry is so small. There are only six airlines in HK and only two of them have cadet pilot programmes.
I am a University student in HK and really want to become a pilot. As there is no air force recruitment and any course in college or University is designed to prepare gradaute for a career as a professional pilot in HK, my chance is very limited. What I can do is to apply the cadet pilot programme of Cathay Pacific and Dragonair. They only hire about 30 people with more than 2000 application a year. Therefore, the selection process would be very tight. Maybe it's just really by luck. There is one more chance to become a pilot that is to apply Government Flying Service but obviously the selection is even tighter.
As I want to become a pilot, I have done something to prepare myself. I joined Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps and applied a few scholarship. Again, the scholarship has a tight selection as many HK youngsters have the same dream as me.
I searched the overseas scholarship but they are only applicable to local citizen. Flight training costs expensively that most of the University students cant afford, including myself. It's really a dream for me to become a pilot.

Well man, you joined the Cadet Air Corps, that might help you get selected. If not, you can work your university studies, get a job in the ' States, get all your certificates and be like hey Cathay look at me for the second officer deal or whatever they do.
 
Hong Kong International Airport is a really beautiful airport. It's the best looking airport in the world right on top with Singapore Changi International.:rawk:
 
I flew(more like, sat in the back) into the old HK airport (Tai Pek, I think) that was beautiful flying so close to all the skyscrapers, and the airport was HUGE.
 
There are other ways around the Cadet program if that's not your cup of tea. I suppose it just depends on how badly you want it. I have a friend who decided to go around the process and is now in training with Eva Air as an FO on the 777. Basically he came to the states to work on his 4 year degree and aquired all his ratings from private-commercial. Afterwhich, as a Taiwanese citizen he went back to Taiwan, made a bunch of calls and bugged everyone until he was given the chance to interview with Eva. He then took all the required tests and subsequently got the job with Eva. All of this was done within 8 months of him returning home.

Now i'm not sure of what he did when he went back to Taiwan but I recall him saying that as a Taiwanese citizen he was eligible for employment with EVA Air with much lower times than what was posted for everyone else. I don't know if it's the same with the other Chinese or HK carriers but it can't hurt to look at the alternatives. And in case you're wondering, he was hired on with around 450 hours TT and 100 multi.

So it can be done, atleast in Taiwan anyways but you might want to look into it.

You mean KaiTak man? Yeahh that airport was very famous due to the IGS 13 approach! You'd had to become certified just to fly there.

I think trying out the Cadet Progam isnt a bad deal at all man, just try your harder and you should really get selected. I wish Airlines here in the US had such programs, here they want the student to pay for it.
