Pilot hostage

Crazy. I hope the guy makes it out alive and well.

Kind of sounds like a part of a plot of a recent cinematic release that has been severely criticized by members of this forum.

Was that a Pilatus Porter in the article? I bet that guy is probably a pretty amazing stick - like the cool scenes in the movie Air America with the unimproved mountain strips, etc. Hope he gets out okay.

Poor guy. Probably time building for his dream airline job and now he find himself in this?

I’ve watched “missionary bush pilot”s YouTube channel and found it interesting. I’d always Wondered if something like this could/does happen. Terrible.

I actually have Port Moresby in my logbook, one of the perks of a previous career flying for a government contractor. I've always been fascinated by PNG, part of me wishes we could have stayed a couple of days to explore, and the other part of me was happy we were just doing a turn: dropping cargo, and heading back. Unexpectedly the catering we ordered there was really good. Hope he makes it out ok, I'm sure he's going to have some crazy stories to tell over a beer or two when he makes it back home.

Different place than he got taken hostage. PNG is the eastern half of the island. Indonesia has the western half.

I flew (in the back) from Moresby to Mt Hagen (on a Fokker 70 and 100) this past summer. Moresby is an absolute mess, with tribal violence and crimes of opportunity prevalent even during the day time. It's a little bit better up in Hagen and some of the other smaller towns, but even there, you've got to be pretty careful where you go and who you have as an escort. In the two weeks I was there, I spent a bunch of shifts working in the ER (part of the non profit I was working with was teaching doctors there how to use point of care, portable ultrasound machines), and almost every day there were at least three or four machete/bush knife attack victims that came in. That said, the people, as individuals, were some of the most friendly I've ever met, and the countryside is incredibly beautiful.

MAF does a bunch of flying up there. I sat next to one of their mechanics on the flight in, and he had some interesting stories.

Also off topic, but we just started watching "Jury Duty" tonight. It is pretty good, premise is a jury and court case played entirely by actors, other than one earnest "juror" (not an actor) who thinks it all is real. The courtroom animated videos presented in the "opening arguments" were pure magic.

Didn't figure you for a Pauly Shore fan.
