Things like how to wire a plug (an essential task with the UK's 240v system) The one useful thing he showed us (the plug) he got wrong

Well if I remember correctly there is no standard plug in the UK. Thus when you buy an electical appliance, they do not come with a plug because they don't know what type of jack you have in your house.

I remember being at RAF Greenham Common and we had their local electricians there to hook up a back up generator and they spent about 3 hours on this (not including there tea break) and when they left and we went to look at their work, the clowns had put male connectors on both ends?

Got to love the Britts.

There is a standard plug now, but we changed wire colour (yes) code a good 20 years ago. May cocked up the older code. Our plugs are different from everywhere else in Europe (which also has a variety) which is why appliances often come without one. Most appliances which use a lot of power now do have molded plugs, and kettle leads are common too, which may be why some men don't know how to do it.

And I love you colonial types too.

Just keep practicing that accent. Unless you meant Top Gear USA, in which case you're probably overqualified.
