Holy Smokes! Is it always this busy at PHX. I am listening to PHX ground/tower and it seems CRAZY there rightr now. The are parking people in the "penalty box", having them do 180's, and the guy on ground is having a case of the Monday's.
grin.gif
He just yelled at some guy:

ground: "you assured us you had a good gate"
aircraft: "we did, but they haven't pulled out"
aircraft: "there leaving now, we should be able to get in"
ground: "turn left or right, I don't care what you do, but Get off of my taxiway!!

What the controller said is very unprofessional. I can't say as I've ever heard something like out of a controller at a large airport. Nothing surprise me at some of the smaller ones, though. Controllers need to keep their cool and have a quick plan B for every situation. Especially on ground control, ground controllers don't even have any seperation rules. If they run two together nose to nose all it takes is a tug to fix the problem. No lives are at stake.

I've seen frequency saturation at LAX on a runway direction change and the controllers just calmly do the best they can until everyone gets pointed in the right direction. Sometimes I can't believe the fuel that is wasted because of the way the system works. I'm not sure what can be done about it, though. I've also seen frequency saturation at other times for training and staffing. The staffing ones especially tick me off. I've seen saturation at 2am at RFD and DFW both. One guy running every position in the tower during the outbound UPS push. Not sure it happens anymore cause it was a safety problem and hopefully got fixed. I wouldn't know cause I just fly days now....

I am listenig to CLE tower and the guy goes:
Controller: Jetlinkxxxx it's like that freezing rain stuff- i think.

Jetlinkxxxx: Ok xxxx

I'll keep u posted on other transmitions

another interesting transmission

Controller: Continental xxx, caution birds at end of runway
Continental xxx: Why would birds be out flying in a day like today?

I just have to chime in on this one!

If you ever get the chance (or misfortune, depending on how you look at it), listen in on some PHL transmissions. I have yet to fly into any place quite like it.

One night as I was departing (around 4am) I overheard the tower controller SCREAMING at a USAirways flight that was on final approach.

I couldn't believe it! I actually had to turn down the radio volume.

Then again maybe I'd be a little torqued as well if I had to work PHL tower by myself at 4am.

What can I say were a busy class B airport. You were prolly listen during a push. With two airlines hub here things get hella hectic fast!

My favorite. It went something like this on PHL approach:

"Airliner 1234 maintain 3000 feet, cleared for ILS 28L approach, RVR 3000"

"Ahh, approach, we need 1800 RVR for the approach"

"Say again?"

"We need 1800 RVR for the approach"

"Ok, Airliner 1234, say intentions. Wait, Airliner 1234, RVR now 1800, can you accept the approach?"

"Roger that, Airliner 1234"

(Very roughly paraphrased.)

yeah, getting frazzled doesn't really do anything but hurt the situation. If its not really a situation you can change why get worked up, it'll just piss other people off and make things more difficult.

I can't stand the Philly Approach Controllers. Also you want to talk about a small airport that has 'issues', try TTN.

I absolutely LOVE the New York Approach Controllers. I am willing to say they are the best in the country.

Yeah I just visited PHX tracon last Friday. They said that they are the fifth busiest class bravo, just slightly behind LAX. But, then they broke it down in comparison to how many runways they had, compared to the others in the top five. After a little math of dividing the numbers up with the how many runways they got, that moves them up to number two (forgot who was #1) .

Yea were a busy class B airport. We have three runways at KPHX but only one 07L/25R is used for takeoffs.Which can lead to added congestion.
Runway 08/26 and 07R/25L are mainly used for landing traffic.

Yeah, Philly is numero uno when it comes to crazy/unreasonable/makes no sense delays. I used to do 3 turns through there everyday.

Wouldn't break my heart if I never had to go back again, but I have to say that PHX is the worst that I've been to on the west coast (never been to SFO though). Flow delays every day no matter what the weather.

Speaking of pilots looking like idiots on the radio, I was paired with a pretty new captain into PHX a while ago . . . he was flying and I was running the radios. Approach switched us over to tower for runway 8 with one in front of us and numerous behind us (in addition to traffic stacked up on 7R). I got our landing clearance for 8 and immediately after, the captain jumps on the radio and tells the tower guy that we want to switch runways to 7R (it's closer to where we park). The tower guys says "unable". The captain jumps on again and says we will go as fast or as slow as needed if we can switch sides.
banghead.gif
The controller about blew a gasket and told us that we can either land on 26 or go around. Of course then the captian doesn't want to talk on the radio anymore so I get to look like the idiot.

Moral of the story: Sometimes pilots bring it on themselves!

In regards to PHL, we could probably devote an entire thread to the FUBAR that is Philly International. Oooohhh I got some good ones!!

Yesterday was my first weekend day working in a few months and I forgot about all of the 'weekend warriors'.

This guy hops up on ATL approach and starts speaking real slowly. "Lanna approach, Cessna 218 sugar pop....over? Ahhh, 218 sugar pop lookin' for flight followin' down ta....ahhh..."

ATL answers, "aircraftcallingatlantamaintainVFRremainclearclassbravonotimetoday"

Whats "Sugar Pop" ??? Seirra Papa?

Sometimes people make up their own "ICAO" alphabet. But yes, sugar pop = "sierra papa".

Nah, thru a Telex 5x5 headset with custom molded earpiece.
