PHL ATC.... professionalism??

Been flying out of PHL a while now and I recognize this lady's voice.

About 2 or 3 months ago she's vectoring us for the approach and there's a huge cell right in front of us on the downwind. I asked for a deviation left or right, didn't matter. She comes back all snarky-like "unable fly present heading." I ask again bc it's a massive cell. She snarks back "I said unable!" So i reply "Merkan 69 declaring an emergency and turning 5 left." She didn't like that. Too bad so sad.

The ground controllers at LAX have been particularly douchey as of late. Lots of passive-aggressiveness.

I tend to think LAX tower is woefully understaffed. I can't understand why LAX ground doesn't have five dedicated ground frequencies and two metering frequencies at all times. I'm reasonably sure that'd fix every problem they have on the ground.

Oh, I'm sorry you misunderstood, I wasn't asking...

I don't work there myself, but I've heard that LAX GND is an absolute nightmare to work and one of the harder Tower positions around. Mix in being exhausted, foreign carriers, and a certain regional airline named after a navigational device that insists on having near identical callsigns leave and arrive in pushes every day (Personal Pet Peeve)and I can see the potential for them to be a bit on edge.

That article can be used for almost every major facility. Hell LAX's staffing is fat compared NY Tracon and certain areas in NY Center.

American and Delta chooses the flight numbers, not Compass, and we hate the the fact that 6040 and 6041 are coming and going at the exact same time. Oh and then there was that period of time when they had the roaming Alpha or Bravo callsigns that was required, but not filed, and had to be changed by clearance. I'm sure those guys loved that.

That ORD ground somehow operates more efficiently than LAX is something that I can't understand. ORD is a always moving circle of death, where LAX is structured in a way that it could function extremely well. But having one ground frequency with the amount of aircraft south ground has to move is nonsensical to me. DTW has at least 500 ground frequencies and not nearly the congestion.

That's because before its one guys problem he hands you off to the next guy.

Seriously though they have so much real estate it never seems like DTW is that busy. Unless its snowing. Or several aircraft from the west terminals are departing east and U becomes a cluster.

I always thought that was the point. I've sat for 45 minutes in the box in LAX waiting to get a word in because there's too much congestion on the ground frequency.

I'll admit LAX is a tiny airport, but whoever staffs ground at two frequencies isn't doing themselves any favors.

Technically ORD only has 2 ground frequencies too. Difference is they have a system.

Agreed. If there is a poster child for a metering frequency at an airport, LAX is it. Why there isn't one befuddles the mind.

Having been based at both airports I can say unequivocally, ORD has it wired and that is what makes LAX so maddening.

Every once in a while I hear a ground controller get on south ground's frequency and Chicago the hell out of the place. After 3 minutes of having the mic keyed continuously the entire south side is cleared up and the trainee gets back on the frequency. Last time I think he said, "If you have a gate, and you can get into it, don't call me, just go."

There was that time during the whole Alpha/Bravo thing when a flight may have been filed as Compass 1...

Why do we care when someone swears on the radio? It's not like young children are buzzing around in the cockpit. I'm sure people swear all the time in offices all around America.

Sure. Why don't we just pee on the sidewalk too?

I could make a comment about the normalization of effing chitty behavior by folks holding offices... but I'll desist.

LAX has put gone into ATC programs due to "staffing" (that's what shows up on the OIS) over the past year,so I'd assume the shortage of staff is pretty legit

Not denying that there is a shortage but west ground never seems to be busy and seems to only exist to say "Bravo, hold short tango, monitor point 75." They could very easily turn that into a metering frequency and everyone's life would be a whole lot easier.

He wears long sleeves. Capt. Oveur was on a lot of avoid bid lists.

Admittedly the only other place I've heard airline pilots and long sleeves don't go is on this website . But why don't they go? I don't know of any other place where you dress up with a shirt slacks and tie and wear short sleeves. I picture the guy in Office Space that they kept moving down to the basement lol. All you need to match is a belly hanging over the belt and black sneakers. I guess this might be why airline pilots aren't asked for fashion advice lol

I've never seen a group of middle aged men turn into such fashionistas about a uniform that has, at most, 3 variations.
