Perspectives

--nice iain-- always good to hear fresh perspectives. Hell- from day one, Iain was as much of a 'web icon' as Doug was- racing along to 100, 200... 1,000 posts.

I have been involved in JC before JC was JC - the good old days - http://www.mindspring.com/~dtaylor

Doug can I have an ETA on the uptime? Cheers mate. You and Kristie have to make it out to CA, come to my place for a BBQ, we can get some JCers over, and just enjoy a Sunday afternoon!

I learned quickly that things get really boring if you turn the A/P on at 600' AGL... If you hand fly the entire trip or at least some of it things are more interesting. I find things are much more enjoyable hand flying the plane so you dont feel like a babysitter all the time. Here are a few observations of what its like out there

Passenger trying to tell gate agent they need to be home for work and cant be bumped because the flight was way oversold

Pilots once the autopilot is turned on

Crew scheduling trying to J/A a trip on your day off

Pilot after spending over 20 minutes trying to tell crew tracking he cant cover the flight due to not enough rest and or timing out

Passengers wondering what the heck happened to good service

Average pilot at some point in his career

Sorry couldnt resist. I do enjoy my job just a lot of extra crap to deal with as part of the job.

Thanks for the perspective Ian. I find myself in a similar situation vis-a-vis the professional flying route. I have learned a lot about the professional flying business which, quite frankly, I had no idea about on this site. JC as really put a reality check as far as how things work in the professional aviation world and I am glad that I got to learn about these things at this point of my aviation education. I just ordered a copy of "Captain" (from the link on JC of course) since Doug described it as an excellent book on what "paying dues" meant in this business.

In the meantime I am enjoying flying my Citabria and working on ratings and seeing where that goes. I may not fly for a living but will keep flying for as long as I live (well, for at least a good chunk of how long I live!).

Great perspective which provides a good mix of experiences for people to read and learn from.

Iain, d00d, you're one of the godfathers of JC. I remember when I put my first forum up, I took a 'health break', came back and noticed that you had registered before I was even able to register myself!

Plus, I remember back in the old days, I only had like two regular users. One was me and the other was you!

I remember when we were about 150 users in the forum, and I though 'I wonder if we will ever get to 1000' - ha ha

Things have certainly changed - yet you are still as accessible, and friendly as always! You are a legend Doug!

Oh Iain, sheesh, trying to see if a black guy turns purple if he blushes?

(brown + red and all that).

Actually, we had over 8000, but I deleted everyone that hadn't logged in for a span of four months from the roster.

Seriously. If Iain hadn't have been a regular at the website back in the early days, I wouldn't have had the motivation of expanding the website.

Too bad I can't throw you any stock options!

Perhaps I should have done all of this website stuff during the dot.com bubble...

Woohoo member number 115! I remember the old days with so few users it was a matter of waiting a day or so to view a new post

173 posts over almost 4yrs aint bad! Funny how I read the forums daily and have such few posts, Quality not quantity is my moto I guess

No offence to anyone of course

Did you turn purple?

Stock Options - I will call Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanely tomorrow and launch our $3B IPO like google? Have you JC'd yourself recently?

Probably!

And yes, I've googled myself on an occasion or two. Kind of embarassing because MOST Doug Taylor's I find on google are enormous geeks.

Hmm....

Good lord.

Yes...

Being named "Doug Taylor" is about as glamourous as being named "Steven Urkel" sometimes!

But my late uncle, whom I'm named after, was quite the ladies man. Wow!

I remember the old days. I think I first showed up on this site back in 98 or 99. I was on the previous forum then re-registered later with this name. That was a long time ago!
