Paying your dues???

(1) Except as provided in paragraph (f)(2) of this section, no person may act as pilot in command of a high-performance airplane (an airplane with an engine of more than 200 horsepower), unless the person has—
This. Gotta be at least 201 hp.

Cheapest way I've found to do this is to get a little time in a turbo Arrow or a 182 if there's one laying around somewhere. Flight school had a 182 at our site so that's how most of the CFIs got their HP.

It doesn't even necessarily need to be in an airplane from my understanding.

That's the plan. Scheduling my multi now for Aug, Sept or Oct. Depending on DPE availability. I'm not applying to anything till after I get that new rating. For money reasons and also I think that I will be a bit more competitive with a AMEL add-on and a high performance and complex cert. Than I am currently with just an ASEL.

I don’t think I’ll ever get my high performance endorsement. I just love the irony of being a 747 captain but not being able to rent a 182 too much.

Y'know, I've never looked into this with a sim before....and now I'm wondering if the Redbird AATD we have at the flight school would cover this.

I figure it would as long as it can be programmed to simulate an aircraft of atleast 201hp. It's the cheap option for those tight on money.

Yeah, we've got all the letters about using it as an AATD that also allows for instrument currency. Can simulate 172s, 182 and a Seminole.

They seem fun, but to fly a GA plane that makes getting somewhere SIGNIFICANTLY quicker it gets expensive really quickly.

Depends. If it is someplace without roads, or over water you are trying to get to, even the most modest airplane suddenly seems pretty convenient. The more capable ones get expensive fast. I went with owning one that is really simple and cheap (a BE19), and can buy airline tickets or rent something more capable as needed.
