Pay for developing course material?

Hey guys, I'm doing some work for my school and feel like I should be getting paid a little more for it but was wondering what you guys think...

I'm developing online homework for the school for our courses and I'm not just cutting and pasting questions from somewhere else but, rather, using my experience teaching and flying and my knowledge of computers to make questions that will help students with their training.

As I'm sitting here in front of the computer for hours on end developing this material that will be used for years and years by a large 141 school, I'm wondering if $20/ hour is a fair rate.... What do you guys think?

I rewrote some school manuals and didn't get a dime. They called it an internship.

$20 an hour isn't bad. Tedious yes.

Sounds good to me. I got paid my normal teaching rate when I was working on tests and training material.

Yea, I felt the same way until I was given a deadline.... Sort of changed my thinking about it. It's a lot of work

eh, normal office work usually has a deadline. I've made tests for our three different aircraft, stage tests, airspace and pre-solo tests in about 10 working hours.

I don't know how technical the work is you are doing. I'm technically daft. <bah dum cha>

But from the outside, $20/hour seems reasonable.

It's not too complex but it helps that I have some experience doing computer programming. And it's way more than 10 hours of work. Each question I have to set a bunch of things up for, all the questions have feedback which is where a lot of work goes into and I'm developing about 1000 more questions with 300 already done. Not to mention, nobody else at the school is willing to do the work I'm doing. But I asked for your guys honest opinions and I appreciate it. Thanks!

I would say $20/hr isn't bad. Then again the last CFI that I knew that has done this wasn't paid a dime. It was one of those schools that has the CFIs all 1099ed but forces them to be at the school all day long. The irony is the CFI they didn't pay had finished law school and ended up filing a lawsuit.

Are you employed by the flight school? If so, are you salaried or paid by the flight hour? If you are paid by the flight hour, are you missing work opportunities to get this work done?

My wife is a professional instructional designer... Classroom, eLearning, job aids, tests, etc.

You would be shocked at just how underpaid you are for this kind of work. Your employer is getting am astonishing deal.

This.

I know how much time it took me to develop my flight school's syllabi, training aids, lesson plans, yadda yadda.

My time was worth WAY more than $20/hr to me.

In some ways. I'm hourly and I get paid the same as everyone else except I have a "Flight Stands" title. I volunteered to work on the homework project and was happily doing so at my own pace until I was given a deadline. I think the way I'm going to handle it is I'm not going to give it priority over flying but if I don't think I'm going to reach the deadline then I'll tell them they need to get more people on it besides just me.

It would not shock me at all. I know we're all, well maybe most, getting shafted $ wise for anything in aviation.

How much was way more?

When she was working full time she made six figures doing instructional design work. She had years of experience as a teacher and certifications in instructional design, eLearning, courseware development, etc. It's really not something you can do with nothing but a CFI's education. Writing tests is an art.

This. It baffles me why aviation people think such ridiculously low wages for technical jobs are acceptable...oh waaaait a second....

In pure honestly I'd say you should be making twice that. or more. think of what a web developer is making per hour... and youre developing web content right?....yeah.

b-b-b-b-but i thought this FOI is teaching me everything i need to know about the inner workings of instructing and the student brain!!

*heavy :sarcasm:*

**sick of studying for FOI**

The way I see it, while you may have volunteered to do the work, you are not "volunteering." You're getting paid for your time. Your boss expects you to get that work done, which means you may have to delegate your other duties (i.e. flying) in order to meet the deadline. The good news is you are paid by the hour, so you will get paid for all the time you put into the project.

As far as how much you "should" get paid: That's a fair question, but kind of irrelevant since you already committed to the work. Next time you should work these details beforehand.
