Passengers Prefer their Pilots to be New Yorkers

Okay, you's guys(actually NYC/LI/NJ phrase), need to recognize that New Yorkers are the epicenter of the planet Earth. As a NYC boy and pilot I get this highly sophisticated study. Commence with your pitiful Cali/Texan/Southern jargon now. :)
 
Where's all the midwesterners at? We don't have an accent. (MN and the UP don't count) Nor does Chicaaaaaago.

Absolutely! Huge difference between sophisticated educated southern and redneck southern. Just watch any Hollywood movie set in the south and you'll know exactly what sophisticated southern DOES NOT sound like.

I find accents fascinating. I can tell from listening to a native Virginian what part of the state they are from within a pretty defined geographical region. When I lived in NJ I got so I could tell what part of the tri-state area you were from. I could listening to southside Virginians (they have a ouse with a woof), Tidewater Virginians (you know the ones from Nahfok?), southeastern Georgians, and eastern North Carolinians talk all day. My mom and I sound very different. I only have a very slight accent while hers is very pronounced and there are some words that she says that even make me laugh. There are a few she can barely say at all. Is that because I've moved around since college and she has been pretty much within 20 miles of where she grew up and her ancestors settled since the Revolutionary War? No idea but we're both similarly educated so I guess it has an influence. Sadly a lot of these accents are being lost over time. Obviously that's a function of our more mobile society now which is a good thing but it's somewhat sad nonetheless because it's a part of history and identity. But my guess is that there were similar conversations being had in the mid 19th century about Americans losing all kinds of foreign accents.
 
Could it just be that most of the flying public that does stuff like take online surveys about how their pilots talk are from the northeast and therefore most comfortable with someone with an accent similar to theirs? Personally, I hear a Noo Yawk Squawk over the PA and I picture road rage, rudeness, and people in a hurry. I'd rather have a slow-talking, laid-back southern boy flying the jet, but that's just me.
 
Or maybe pax tend to hear more PA's when dealing with delays. Being that LGA/JFK/EWR and anything going in or out of that airspace hole has its own 1-2-3 rule (1 cloud, 2 raindrops, 3 hour delay), it's Stockholm syndrome.
 
Texans just *know* their superiority over other nations in the same way man is supposed to have dominion over beasts. To that thinking it's not even an argument to be had; it would be like having an inferiority complex with a horse or a fish.

But we can pity, and I'm sure sorry y'all in other places can't also enjoy the grandeur.
