Passenger gets $1200 wi-fi bill on flight.

We have satellite internet on the Falcon 900 and no one is allowed to use it. Yeah it is a 3 engine private jet, burning about 300 gallons of Jet A every hour that costs of 3000 bucks an hour to run.

BUT DON'T USE THE SATELLITE INTERNET BECAUSE IT COSTS SO MUCH!
That sounds like a business expense tax deduction that the rich bastards could be taking advantage of.

Damn. We have the same in the challenger and we use it constantly. Un limited plan.

We have Aircell or now called Gogo Biz as well. It runs on an unlimited plan, for now. In 2016 the plans all change to a more expensive plan systemwide.

Of course that is a ground based system and the satellite system is totally different.

Yeah. I don't know. I've gotten back to no opening the iPad unless I need to see a chart. I don't use wifi at all anymore. Its over 2k a month for unlimited Aircell or Gogo Biz. I haven't seen the Satellite based internet billing stuff. I imagine it is super expensive even if one does not use it.

Personally I would be happy being unreachable for a few hours if I were a busy rich guy but that is just me...

$30,000 a month is not unusual for the satellite based system installed on the Falcon 900. Satellite based wifi is not cheap, that's why most airplanes have a ground based system like Gogo in addition to the satellite based system.

Alex.

I would love to have wifi in flight, so I could stop bugging Mexican ATC for the weather at my destination...

Nah, if UAL can charge $10 for unlimited wifi NRT-SFO, Singapore doesn't justify a $1200 bill.

That's a pretty fair price. Actually I'd call that low. I remember being floored that it was $30 for unlimited between JFK and NRT on JAL. For 14 hours, that's pretty incredible. Long haul flights are where you really need the wifi. Thanks to you fine folks, I can keep myself entertained on the internet basically indefinitely. TV and Movies...meh.

Just curious, if it's unlimited for another year or so why not use it? You guys are paying for unlimited right?

It was probably more than that, but yeah, it was the first time I'd seen inflight wifi on an oceanic flight. It was awesome.

I meant using for like inflight WX and such. Not checking out JC to see what airplanes Delta has ordered. :)

Yeah I gotcha. It's just that most of my iMessages, cool mountain bike movies, cool mountain bike photos, the mountain biking Facebook pages I run, Facebook messages and alerts, surf reports, emails and of course fapping over the latest Delta news. It's all jumping out of my iPad whenever I switch out of Jepp FD.

It's like crack. So I just get the WX via AFIS or just trust the forecast and look out the dang window. I'm a better pilot for it.

YOU MUST HAVE DISIPRIN!

Charging $1 for a MB of bandwidth is absolute robbery.

Yes he knew up front, but that's just idiotic.

Don't go spouting a bunch of BS about how "Well he's in a magical tube hurtling through space time"

I don't care, that's about a 5000% mark-up on the actual cost.

Note, I made that number up, but I'm probably not far off the mark.
Data is $5.12/mb when roaming in Mexico. Crazy.
