A man flying from London to Singapore who bought a $29 Wi-Fi package was shocked to receive a $1,200 Internet bill upon landing, the Washington Post reports.

“You know that epic feeling when your flight ends and you finally get to your destination?” wrote Jeremy Gutsche, a CEO of Canadian technology site Trend Hunter, on his blog. “Now imagine taking those first steps off the plane, syncing your phone, and getting a $1,200 bill for airplane internet use.”

Gutsche tweeted a copy of the bill, which was for $28.99 for 30 MB of Internet access, plus $1,142.47 in overage fees.

Gutsche said on his blog that he visited about 150 pages. He estimated that a Powerpoint file he uploaded cost about $100.

"I hope my team liked it," he wrote.

Sorry, sympathy is word between sssschit and syphalis in my book.

I also cried crocodile tears for a friend of mine, while stationed in Japan took his cellphone to Thailand and proceeded to get a million dollar bill as well.

Read the fine print folks.

Charging $1 for a MB of bandwidth is absolute robbery.

Yes he knew up front, but that's just idiotic.

Don't go spouting a bunch of BS about how "Well he's in a magical tube hurtling through space time"

I don't care, that's about a 5000% mark-up on the actual cost.

Note, I made that number up, but I'm probably not far off the mark.

Like to be there when that expense report goes through.

I have never heard of in-flight wifi continuing to stay connected and let you use it, if you go over the time period. I have purchased 4 hour blocks, and unlimited for the flight and day, never have I seen that. Absolutely outrageous!

Actually, it's probably justified. The up-front technology costs are immense for these companies, and the number of users is very small. To get back your investment and make a profit, you've got to charge insane rates.
Nah, if UAL can charge $10 for unlimited wifi NRT-SFO, Singapore doesn't justify a $1200 bill.

Sorry. Charging overages when only allowing essentially one web page worth of content at the original price is robbery.

Satellite internet has been around for a long time now. It shouldn't cost that much.

We have satellite internet on the Falcon 900 and no one is allowed to use it. Yeah it is a 3 engine private jet, burning about 300 gallons of Jet A every hour that costs of 3000 bucks an hour to run.

BUT DON'T USE THE SATELLITE INTERNET BECAUSE IT COSTS SO MUCH!

To me it sounds like the airline just billed at the normal rate. How this was not communicated effectively to the passenger is beyond me.
