Part 61/141 Differences

I can guarantee my students on JC would attest that there is no 200+ manual for them to read. If you are talking about certain shops, you should say so, instead of giving all 141 a black eye.

I've been part of 2 university based 141 programs (one operates both 141 and 142). One of them wasn't bad, didn't have too much operations stuff that was required to follow, but still they managed to baby sit when you could/couldn't fly. It was tolerable, and I didn't leave the program there because of the flight people. The other one (also a university based program, large one in Florida), has crazy amounts of manuals and whatnot. 300 pages of operational stuff for a 172. They do the same for the other planes they fly. Sure, some of it is due to the size of the program, but in general, I don't feel it to be necessary to have quite that much stuff to teach someone how to get a private certificate in a Skyhawk.

Again, do I think all 141/142 is bad? No, I don't. Do I think all 61 is good? No, I don't. I honestly just don't see the advantage today of going part 141 for pilot training. All students are doing is shooting themselves in the foot long term, by cutting the number of hours they get.
