Part 141 transition.

Hi,

I have started training, but am concerned about a few things.

My schedule is looking to change soon, and I am under part 141 training. Can I switch to part 61 to accomodate my schedule?

Will I be penalized if I don't? I.E. not completing stage checks when they are due.

Yes you can change but you may face other issues because of the difference in regs. Make sure switching from 141 to 61 is exactly what you want to do but keep in mind part 141 training does not require that you finish in any specific time period that I can recall.

Actually, at my 141 school, we had to finish a stage within 3 months. Otherwise it was a meeting with the Chief Flight Instructor. Part 61 lets you have alot of flexibility but the hour requirements are more (instrument and commercial.)

Also, if you decide to go back, only a certain percentage of your Part 61 training will count back for you 141 training.

But that's not an FAA requirement, that's your school's rule. By the way, why would it really matter? So you go have a meeting with the Chief. Meh. What's he going to do, tell you he doesn't want your money any more since you're taking too long?

To be fair, the only real difference between 141 and 61 at the private level is the paperwork that the school has to keep track of. Also, how the program was written up by your school and approved by the FAA. Our teaching is the exact same for both and realy doesn't matter much in the scheme of things. Now, once your go to the instrument/commerical level, things change. mostly in the hours needed category. 190ish, instead of 250 hours....

The private is 35 instead of 40, but I have yet to have a student finish our program in under 55 hours and most end up mid 60's. Just the way it goes and reality in a busy training environment with a very busy airspace.

Well to give a little more info:

I had my first flight saturday and the 141 "ground school" starts tomorrow, from 8-12PM for a week and a half. I also only have $4000.00 on account but will receive a disbersement for additional loans at the beginning of the fall semester (August 27)

At the rate I am going I will run out of cash in two weeks, in which time I would have completed 35 hrs of ground school and 12hrs flying.

I will obviously continue when my loans disburse, but I don't want to get screwwed over because I am not on the schools schedule. (When I run out of cash it will be two-three weeks before I get money again.)

Should I switch to 61 and focus on actual stick time, and try to spread the time for as long as I can (flying 2-3 times per week). And then study at home? Or should I stick with 141, get the 35hrs ground, and 12 hrs flight, wait 3weeks and then get on with it??

Actually, each 141 school is unique. The FAR's outline the minimum time and training requirements, but each school submits a syllabus for each certificate or rating and the FAA approves the syllabus as long as it meets FAR 141 requirements and otherwise seems to be a safe training program.

Most schools don't increase flight times, (some do) but many do add policies and procedures that increase training effectiveness.
There can be minimum calender times, to weed out the slackers, etc.

No one on this forum can know for sure what your school policy is. If you are enrolled, you should have all this information available to you.

You should be having this discussion with your Flight Instructor. If he is unable to assist you, see the Chief.

RALPH,

You are being WAY too vague... I understand you are a new student pilot, but there is a lot of stuff that you aren't telling us about the situation. We cannot accurately answer your questions because we do not know anything about your school's policy.

Personally I think it is ridiculous that you won't be able to make $4,000 last til August. Are they one of those school's that requires you to fly twice a day six days a week?

See, those are the bits of info that you are needing to tell us before we can give you a good answer.

Joseph
