Part 141 schools get a break on new ATP requirement?

So today my friend is telling me something like people that go through 141 schools are supposedly going to be allowed to get their ATP with 500 hours. Can anybody comment on this? I thought this was highly unlikely considering this be cutting 1000 hours off of the current requirement. I personally haven't heard of such a thing and I don't think they would ever do this, but I would love to hear what you guys have to say.

I think that this is just a stunt to try to keep people going to the pilot mills. 1,000 would be a enormous cut on the requirements. Considering this was coming from someone inside of a 141 institution. Feedback?

Also just to clarify, I know for sure this isn't a regulation right now, but I was told that it was being proposed.

Could he offer up the documentation?

Some mills were lobbying for an exception when the 1500 bill was being written but I don't think they got it.
And I bet that the action by the mills was the "spark of truth" that started this rumor.

Your buddy is wrong, period. Ask him to cite a source other than Kit Darby or any of the other hacks.

I heard they(4 year aviation schools) did...no proof just rumor. No way it would be 500 hour though. Maybe 800-1000.

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of you guys, I would love to see the proof, I just think it would be ridiculous to reduce the minimums that much.

The thing is the new law says that 121 FOs have to have, not 1500 hours but an ATP. The FAA won't change the FARs unless it improves safety, and you will be hard pressed to say reducing the aeronautical experience requirements improves safety.

Hopefully it stays a rumor.

HR5900 is the law. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-5900

Open it and go all the way to the bottom.

(d) Credit Toward Flight Hours- The Administrator may allow specific academic training courses, beyond those required under subsection (b)(2), to be credited toward the total flight hours required under subsection (c). The Administrator may allow such credit based on a determination by the Administrator that allowing a pilot to take specific academic training courses will enhance safety more than requiring the pilot to fully comply with the flight hours requirement.

I still cannot find where Obama has signed it. If so, he has been sitting on the thing since the end of July.

Alrighty then.....there is the answer...1500 Hr ATP minimum...BUT the administrator can give hour credit for classroom training.

Yes, but doing so would involve changing the FARs which the FAA has a long history of not doing unless it is in the interest of safety. Academic training courses do have value, but not even 500 hours worth of value IMHO... Especially when you're low time, that's when you learn the most from flying.

I agree that it will be hard for them to actually do something about this given the current requirements for an ATP. Now if it just said that the person had to meet the requirements, but not attain the ATP, a heck of a lot easier.
