I have a chance to go to Parris Island as a NJROTC field trip in January and I would like to know what is there to be done there. The only thing I know is that we will be spending one of the four nights aboard an aircraft carrier. A once-in-a-life opportunity for many people.

Never been there, but that is Marine Corps boot camp country. Lloyd could probably fill you in more than me. Since you are going there as part of a NJROTC field trip, I would think your days are pretty much planned out.

Well, I used to do the Drill Instructor thing for some NJROTC units (I was an NJROTC guy myself...), and we were pretty tough on the kids!

The whole goal, however, wasn't to make Marines out of high school kids, but to give them a general idea of what Marine Corps life (training, in particular) was like. So, for the whole time, we treated them as if they were recruits!

So we're not just on the background of things and being given a tour of the island and stuff? We're actually participating as wannabee recruits?

Hasn't your NJROTC CO given you guys an idea of what to expect? In any case, wouldn't hurt to brush up on your General Orders or be able to do push-ups...lots of push-ups

I really suck at push-ups. Last time I counted I could only do about 32. As for my general orders, I'm just learning them now as I recently moved from Army JROTC. Promotions testing was this week, let's see if I'll get promoted to PO3.

If you have the right program, you will!!

It's been 20 years since I was at Parris Island in 1st Battalion, 1059, and 22 years since I graduated from New York Military Academy which was an Army JROTC school.
Parris Island is divided up in to several areas. Receiving, 1st & 2nd Battalion, and administration are all in the parade ground area, not much to do there but formation drills, as it's mostly barracks, supply, and administrative buildings. The obstacle course is on the far side of the parade grounds and that is lots of fun! You guys may get to run the Obstacle Course and take a shot at the Confidence Course, both are challenging and fun if you don't have a DI breathing down your neck the whole time. The rifle range area is off by itself with it's own barracks, and the barracks for the Drill Instructor's school. You probably won't get a chance to use the range since it is always busy but it is neat to see. The island has an old airstrip that is surrounded by what seems like miles of wilderness (probably not, but it sure felt like it!), that is where they took us for "hell week". Recruits never get to see the rest of the Island where the regular Marines work so I can't tell you whats there. Should be a fun trip, at least you can say you were there! Are you staying in the barracks or camping out?

We are camping out. Also, where is the nearest place that an aircraft carrier could get from there. The trip involves us staying aboard an aircraft carrier on the last night.

If you're camping out, it will be a great time. NAS Beaufort is right next to Parris Island, so that must be the place. It will be interesting to hear the report when you get back. Ahh, to be young again!

Do you know if it is an active duty carrier? I can't remember how far Charleston is from Parris Island, but there is a carrier museum anchored in Charleston. It is the U.S.S. Yorktown; I cannot recall the hull number though.

This is probably where you are staying:

Yep, that must be it. I wish we could fly there in a C-130 instead of catching a bus.
