Two die in St. Lucie County plane crash

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - A small plane crashed today in northern St. Lucie County, killing two of the three people on the single-engine aircraft, officials said.

The third person survived with only minor injuries, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara said. Identities of those aboard the plane were not released.

The crash occurred at about 1 a.m. today just west of St. Lucie International Airport. The crash knocked out Florida Power & Light Co. power lines, causing power outages in the area.

The plane is owned by Pan Am Flight School, which has offices at the airport.

Sheriff's spokesman Mark Weinberg said the National Transportation Safety Board was notified of the crash and would investigate. No further information was immediately available.

Not a good week for flying in FL. Condolences to the friends/families of those involved...

Not good....

. Hasn't been the third Panam plane to go down recently? If I remember correctly- a twin in PA, one at the the AZ campus and now this one?

That's too bad. My condolences go out to all. It can be a busy area with FSA close by there.

It's not busy at 1am. FSI closes at midnight, hardly anybody would be up shooting approaches at that time on a Sunday night. Anyone know any other details?

Don't know the details...

I hate to speculate, but the RVR this morning was next to nothing. I just flew into Vero Beach about 30 minutes ago and it was fogging up pretty good already.

Aviator is right, nobody is around at 1 am.

And that makes three.

This week, in Florida (including the PanAm crash), there was a mid-air that killed one man in a C150. The Twin Commanche he hit landed safely with minor damage.

And a small aircraft crashed near VNC.

Be careful out there people!

What a shame. It is a miracle that 1 survived.

Obviously don't know what happened or why. But, the weather certainly didn't help matters.

Lets all keep an open mind and wait until the facts are in. How many CFI's are out flying at 0100 hours of the night? Not any that I know of.

I remember from back when I was thinking of going to a Academy to finish my ratings, that Pan Am does most of their instrument training at night. The reason for this is you can fit more students into less planes by having students who do not need daylight for their training ie instrument students can fly when primary and commercial students cannot because of darkness.

Thats funny, I'm a CFI and I've flown around lots at 0100. Both as a CFI and in training as a student.

I'm not yet a CFI but have flown many times after 0100. It's kind of strange flying into my home airport which is a fairly busy Class D, and have no one else around and the tower closed.

I don't like to speculate either but the fog was extremely heavy that morning (at least at 5am). I could barely find my car in the driveway....
