P-51s Collide at Oshkosh

This is a second mid air including that news helicopter collision, crazy day. :panic: sky is becoming too crowded.

I was up there today. I saw the air race immediately prior to the crash, but walked back to the exhibits before it happened. From what I could gather, the two pilots were a father/son team. Very tragic.

Yeah I was a couple hundred yards away. I didn't hear it, but looked up after it was quiet and saw the tail in the air. I certainly hope they weren't landing in formation when that happened. That would be a sorry reason to die. I don't think anybody should land in formation.

Ever.

Rest in Peace, Brother.

That was the word I saw before I left for work. They were landing in formation. :o

Formation takeoffs and landings are not inherently dangerous...IF you're trained and the event is thoroughly briefed...

I'd like to note that the military doesn't do formation takeoffs and landings except for the demonstration teams. ;)

I think that's for a reason...

Well I would have to disagree. There were numerous times I would see it happen at Hickam (sp?) AF Base. We'd be golfing and you could see them taxi/take off all the time from the reef rw. That's just one base. I am sure there are plenty more.

Yeah, I've watched the ANG 16's in SYR takeoff in formation. Pretty sure they're not doing it for a "demonstration."

How many P-51's are left flying. That makes 3 less this month alone. I am beginning to get very upset at the loss of these historic aircraft. Yes, the loss of life is tragic, but it really bothers me to see these rare machines disappearing at this rate.

Wikipedia says 287 total, 154 flying. Don't know how accurate that is though...they got that from mustangsmustangs.com

No, just too many morons in the sky. It's way past time for GA user fees and outlawing fighter pilot wannabes at airshows.

While I am in no way implying these two men were morons(I don't think you were either), I do agree with your comment to some extent. Way to many people flying that shouldn't be IMO.

And that just scratches the surface. There are so many things that people do that are wrong and should either be taxed out of existence or made illegal. Those of us who know the right way to live just need to get together and decide how we want to change everyone else. We can do this!

Accidents happen no matter if someone lives the "right way" or not. Besides that, more airplanes in the sky = more mid airs in the future, Unless we get a brand spanking new airspace system from FAA :D
