overnight layover at HNL

Hi!

I flew from LA to HNL a few years ago with UAL. Does anybody know how the major airlines handle the layover for their crews at HNL? If you're having flight UA53 (which was mine) from LAX to HNL, do you have an overnight stay or will you have to fly back at the same day ( UAL 52 )?

A flight that long will not be flown as an out-and-back as a general rule. There could be a "follow-on" thing, like SFO-LAX-HNL or LAX-HNL-OGG for example, but there would be a layover before returning to the mainland.

Correct.

Actually there's an airline, who will remain nameless (not my employer!) who is lobbying the FAA to extend the maximum domestic flight time restriction to allow their crews to fly from the east coast to the west coast and back.

From what I understand, a lot of crews that do long-distance trips to Hawaii and the like often have longer overnights, in the 30-hour range.

Imagine being able to tell people that you've been to Hawaii twice in the last 4 days....

You think it sucks to sit for 3-5 hours, try having to stand & roam the aisles the entire way from LAX to JFK! Especially when it's packed with every seat full and the other 9 F/As are all trying to hide in the AFT galley, there's just not enough room back there!
