Out with the Rectangle; In with the Oval — new flight pattern

I don't care what shape your pattern is, as long as your downwind isn't 2 miles from the runway. What happened to the old 1/4 to 1/2 mile thing? Last time I flew GA I saw some seriously huge traffic patterns...

My favorite part of my job is doing a simple pattern. They typically aren't rectangular or oval because I can't see very well from right seat when doing left traffic!

The reason some instructors do T&G's versus full stop taxi back.

Whether or not the instructor has ATP mins.

Sad but true.

But bloody hell, when I'm in a J-3 and you're in a 182, and I'm having to do 360's on the downwind to stay behind you...

I'm right there behind you. Flying a Pitts or Extra behind a C152 in the pattern is a challenge, and often I'll pass them on the inside as they continue on their cross country before turning base.

Semi-related: As an instructor, you just have to know when to yield to other traffic. Last week an instructor in a C one five two heavy and I had a disagreement on who should lead the way from the ramp to the runway. As I departed the downwind, they were still doing their run-up.
