Hey Doc,
I've got a question for you about oral steroid dosage and the FAA's position on the max amount allowable.
I'm currently on Advare 250/50 to manage my asthma. It's a miracle drug as far as I'm concerned, and keeps my lungs working pretty well. At the same time, for about the last 10 years I've had discussions with allergist about upping the dosage to 500/50. The discussion has basically been that, given my spirometry rest results, I'm on the line of where my allergist would bump me up to 500/50. On one hand, my original allergist (treated me from diagnosis at 18 months to when I was about 21) was fairly hands off. He was of the opinion that I had dealt with my asthma for long enough, that if I could do the activities I wanted to do (swam in high school) and I felt fine, that he would prefer the lower dosage.
The other side of that conversation is upping the dosage to 500/50 for 6-12 months to see if it makes a difference in my lung function. The concern of doing so, from my allergists perspective, is that this may make the FAA uncomfortable with reissuing my medical, which is now on a special issuance due to the asthma (for those of you keep score at home, the FAA audited a bunch of their records, and put a bunch of people on SI's when they had held a medical prior without an SI. I'm one of those people now).
So what's your take? Do you think the FAA would care if I went up to Advare 500/50 from 250/50 for 6-12 months to see what happens?
