Opportunities Abroad?

My husband and I lived abroad for the past 5 years while he was flying for an airline in China. He will be soon looking at retirement and we both would like to retire abroad. Does anyone know of countries that hire "western" dispatchers? For flying jobs there are companies that specialize in these jobs. Does anyone know which contract companies to look at? Would love to hear about anyone's experience working as a dispatcher in another country.

I got a friend that works for Raytheon in Afghanistan, not sure how high on your retirement list that is.

I had an online friend who worked for Etihad for a few years in Abu Dhabi. I know Emirates also hires expat dispatchers. He unfortunately passed away after returning to the US, but his blog is still up if you want to check it out, it has some good information on the subject: http://expatuae.blogspot.com
 
The UAE has gone from a very nice place to live in the 90s; to pretty okay in the early 2000s; to a little stressful with the massive building boom of the mid-2000s; back to okay after the housing crash of 2008 (as long as you didn't get burned by that crash); to barely tolerable in early 2011-2013 time frame; to totally intolerable now.

As employers the Arabs can't help themselves. They treat employees, even educated professionals, like slaves. I had a pretty good run there, but left at the right time. The reason it was good prior to the 2010s is that the managers were all expats. Now the managers are primarily Arabs.

........and yes, I know this is the dispatcher forum but it's the same for them as it is for any other employee. Repeat this three times, "the Arabs just can't help themselves, the treat all employees like slaves".

Plus the cost of living in the UAE has skyrocketed. Not a good retirement plan.

Go to northern Thailand. Friendly people; good food; plenty of other expats; and dirt cheap to live.

Wow... I'd heard it's not what it used to be but had no idea it had gotten that bad. What a shame.

I have heard Cambodia is also nice and even cheaper. Haven't been to either place myself though. While I doubt there are many airline jobs to be had in either locale...if the cost of living is low enough, it may be possible to retire completely sooner than you might have thought.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled dispatch programming... :)

We spent a lot of time in Cambodia. It was a wonderful country to visit. I do know that hire expat pilots for their national airline but don't know what other positions they hire from outside. They don't pay as well as some of the neighboring countries but like you mentioned the cost of living is very low. On 1500 usd per month one could live like a king or queen!
 
From what I have heard, one can get on pretty easily in Europe with an FAA dispatch certificate. Austrian Airlines was recently hiring and all they required was a Dispatch Certificate. Not sure if you have to get an European certificate once over there.
 
Anyone know anything about Air Canada first hand or otherwise? Im happy where I'm at now but always had that thought of leaving the country in the back of my mind while I was at a regional.

While I've never been to Montreal, I have been to western Canada and the plains where my mothers family is from, and really love Canada. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about the beauty and history of Montreal and its certainly intruiging.

It would be an awesome place to live imo.
 
Derriko, I believe that you can dispatch for Air Canada, however you must pass their version of the ADX in order to a Canadian Dispatch Certificate. I believe this all one has to do as long as you have a FAA issued certificate.

I have been to Montreal and it was awesome! Just make sure to go in the Summer though lol.
