Operators with bases at KCM airports

CFI A&P

Exploring the world one toilet at a time.
Rule #1 of TSA is "Inconsistency is another layer of security." but I'm trying to get an understanding as to the decision on which airports receive KCM, while others don't. Some of them are pretty obvious JFK, SEA, PHX, etc. Yet others are really puzzling, such as Manhattan, KS and Jackson, MS. Can I get some help from the JC crowd to identify what operators (121 or 135) have bases at these airports? Or if they were chosen due to the high volume of trips and overnights at that airport, for example - SW has a large presence at ISP. I've removed some of the more obvious airports, but if anyone knows that ABC charter or Sand Piper Air has a base at a particular airport can you chime in?

Hell, they just make it up as they go. I know this is going to sound strange, but I wanted to go through security the other day (I had just gone out for a smoke on a turn, and had no bags to scan). Where I was at, is like a 5 minute process for KCM to get into place, and get it all done. There was no line, so I was just going to zip right through. I was told "If you have KCM, you HAVE to use KCM." WTF? That's a new one. The ironic thing, the airport I was at, doesn't do randoms on KCM.

"Inconsistency is another layer of security" my ass. They don't know WTF they're dong, won't tell you why TF they're doing it, because they have no clue. I'm generally friendly to them, but I also call them out on their asshettery, and that usually upsets them. IDGAF. Show me a set of rules I'm supposed to follow. So me the set of rules you're supposed to follow, and we'll all get along much better, I promise. Until then, when they make it up as they go, I'll be a PITA, because the last station had no problem with me keeping my Laptop and my EFB in my flight kit, so don't get smart with me.

I’ve had them tell me I had to show a passport or drivers license to go through KCM. Nope. It says government issued photo ID. And I have a different one I prefer.

To answer the question as to which airports get it, not a clue.

For the love of god can FAT get it? Crew base, and a ton of overnighting crews there, some on standups. Meanwhile it's one of the most invasive regular TSA checkpoints I've ever been through as crew, and they never have pre-check open for crews.

KCM requires a minimum average number of crew members per hour. I forget what the number is, but they track it.

Good to know. Not that I doubt you, but any idea of a source for this?

Florida has a severe lack of KCM. TPA RSW should both have it. But of course I’m only saying that because I go on trips out of those airports l

TSA - I work in management at TPA.

And word is they’re planning on rolling out temporary hours KCM at certain airsides. Not perfect, but it’s a start. Will target peak departure periods I believe. Dont have all of the details yet.

Just as long as airside drop off/pick up doesn't go away. :)

How about Terminal B at LGA, they close at 8pm but still have an agent sitting at the computer because they have to monitor the exit. They basically just turn the computer off. No reason to close at all. Found that out the hard way the other night when I showed up at 815pm. They don’t even have an employee line either, got stuck behind about 30 other passengers.

uh, do you know what @Murdoughnut does for a living?

I’m slightly aware and definitely don’t doubt his information but I’m trying to persuade TSA to open KCM at a specific airport and I could use all the information I can get. Citing book chapter and verse is more useful than “a guy on the internet says so.”

I had a bloke in sjc tell me I had to use kcm because I needed a boarding pass to go through the regular line.

My favorite are the few places that make me take my ID out of the badge holder.

And if you or your crew uses KCM, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make sure they arrive at the checkpoint prepared to scan, show and move on quickly.

The seconds you spend digging through your man-bag, or your purse, then casually scanning your ID and the "pleasantries" like "Hows your mom? Oh we're flying to Akron!" adds up to minutes and adds delay. Kind of like rubbernecking on the freeway at an accident, you've just caused a 20 mile ongoing "ripple" on the freeway that can last for hours.

Have your crap out and ready to go. Period. I don't even care why you didn't, if you don't, step the hell aside.

My biggest pet peeve are ourselves.

Few places? We must not fly the same places, because I'd say there's a bunch of place that make me take it out. "Sir, you're required to take it out everywhere..." Yeah, well, see, if I was, it wouldn't be in this holder.
