Open Dialogue

I do agree that some unions serve a purpose. I would cry if my pay went down 30%! It would seem the ALPA hasnt done as much as they could have with all the recent cuts. After all, you havent heard of any pilot wages going up, right? Only down. I think the ALPA need an overhaul. Pilots are worth more than they are paid.

What has the ALPA done that is constructive lately? Not a whole lot.

It's probably a bit hard when companies are posting multiple billions in losses yearly.

Look back at the good times and see what they did. Personally, I think they accomplished a lot, and made the profession worth putting up with crap wages for years.

Also understand ALPA does more than just neogotiate pay scales - they are a powerful lobby force in Washington.

I would tend to agree. Its unfortunate that the market place can not dictate wages and companies have to battle their pilots. I tend to believe that pilots get walked all over which is the obvious mission of the ALPA.

I tend to also think there are unions only if there is reason for one to exist, and once they are there there is never a true friendship between them and the management.

I will take a look at the comany I wok for (not as a pilot). Durring the "paycuts to remain competitive" phase that started in December, as a non-union employee I took a 4% pay cut, with no work rule changes. The only benifit change was a $50 charge to activate your flight bennies which was the same for all employees system wide. I still make more per hour than most everyone in my area for an unskilled job. FAs (teamsters) went through 1113 procedings and got rejected by the courts. The pilots voted and passed a substantial pay cut by 14 or so votes, on top of a pay freeze. The mechanics also voted for a small pay cut. I am by no mans a "company man" but I feel that by being non union we were treated much better than the unionized groups.
