Lake Charles bound plane lands in Sulphur by mistake - KPLC 7 News, Lake Charles, Louisiana

SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) -

It happened again. Passengers aboard a Continental Express plane bound for Lake Charles were delayed after the plan landed outside of Sulphur by mistake Wednesday night.

The aircraft landed at Southland Field outside Sulphur instead. Sam Larsh, airport manager tells 7News the plane, coming from Houston, was scheduled to land at 10:30 p.m.

"This has happened here three times in the last 15 years or so," Larsh said. "It's an easy mistake to make."

The Lake Charles and Southland Field runways are the same layout and both Lake Charles Regional and Southland Field are the same latitude, but different longitudes according to Larsh.

"The runways again are based on prevailing winds, so airports in this area all have similar runway headings," he said.

The air traffic control tower at Lake Charles Regional is not staffed after 10 p.m., which may have added to the confusion, officials said.

The aircraft was still parked at Southland Field Thursday morning and was returned to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston Thursday afternoon.

I've almost done it twice, my FO saved me in both cases. I think first time was SJC at night, other was YEG at night also. wait, make it 3, I forgot about tucson, tower saved me on that one. This was over a span of 6 years.

SJC? Did you confuse Mineta with Moffet?

Happens fairly often. The Northwest DC-10 incident is the worst I've heard of. Others not mentioned that I know of include a Northwest A319 bound for GFK landing at a near by AFB and everyone having to shut the window shades, a Challenger bound for DRO landing at a nearby uncontrolled field(pilots were fired on the spot and plane had to be ferried out late at night), and a woman flying solo across the Atlantic that landed in the wrong country, her name slips my mind. ;)

How can you find a runway w/o automation? O the noz...

It amazes the lack of basic airmanship so called professionals have.

Re: Wasn't there a terminal here last time?

It's really, really easy to do up there.

Like super easy.

Like for anybody that hasn't gone in there, it'd blow your mind at how easy it is.

It's also very easy to TO on the wrong runway. The only difference is they didn't kill a plane full of people this time so it's a nonevent...right?

Flying from MCI to OMA, I shot a saWEEEEET visual approach into Offut AFB. Then I was wondering what the hell an E-4 was doing on the ramp and approach said something like "You don't plan on landing there, do ya Skywayex 1994, stop descent, fly heading blah blah blah for a few more miles".

Saaaaaved my bacon.

Man I don't know how many times in Texas I found myself going "uhhhh...which podunk town is that blob of light on the freeway? Is that Canton, or is that Mineola?". And of course every single town has a 18/36 or 17/35 located just north of town. Once you have some time under your belt, and a good VFR chart, it's easy enough to figure out provided you have some situation awareness, at least at less than 10000 feet and 150 knots. I can see how you could land at the next town over if you're moving fast and coming out of the enroute environment, in which case you probably weren't counting Texas hamlets and observing their nuances (like the fact that the freeway passes through the NORTH side of town vice the SOUTH side) as would be the case in a 121 op.

No biggie. Should've just landed, taxied up to NEACP, shut down and asked for a tour. They're very accomodating.

Oakland and Hawyard are the exact same way.
I can see how it can be done by even a good aviator.

Heck CBF had two different United flights mistake it for OMA before the airport was relocated.

CBF is still much easier to see than OMA with the same runways.
