On-Demand Cargo Operators

I was just searching around and found some smaller charter cargo companies that use ac like Cessna 210's, Barons, ect... Anyways, I am curious how do companies like that get their clients and customers? What does their market share look like? Do they operate under the traditional FAR 135 air carrier certificate? What's the money like for companies like this? (not for pilots, but for the business itself)

TMK all freight is moved under 135, 121, or 125. A lot of the on-demand freight is bid on. Several companies run bid boards and the on-demand operators bid on trips and the lowest bidder usually wins. Some of the boards are run by active aero, kalitta, etc.

The pay varies some trips make a lot of cash and other just a little. The planes are usually charted out by the Statute Mile and are round trip. Occassionally a trip will be quoted one way if the company needs to get a plane home or somewhere else.

All of the companies that I know do as Bandit described. It's the best way for companies needing to get the charter to get the lowest price.

Every once in a while they are charters called from one of the customers, but not very often.

Which is a more lucrative/more economically stable business to be in, air freight/air courier or on-demand passenger/air taxi?

Many variables. Depends on your location. Depends on the type of aircraft you want to operate. Depends on the economy. Depends on the season.
