Okay peeps, I got a confession to make...

Well I operate off good old CGI on occasion. Got a good friend and customer who grows rice in East Cape. Now if'n you lived there I KNOW you spent some of your hard-earned dough in the Purple Crackle eh?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep, spent alittle time at the Purple Crackle and had completely forgotten about the place until you just brought it up...small world. Can't believe it's still there. I was at SEMO from 80'-83' and went to Cape Central high school prior to that.

I started my aviation career at good ole' Cape Central Airways there at CGI. Spent a lot of time west of 3 mile hill doing stalls/steep turns and dutchman LOM doing ILS's to rwy 10. I did several x-countries down to Sikeston, Mo. to eat at Lambert's Cafe and getting dinner rolls thrown at us. Got hired by Air Illinois (Twotter f/o)for a short time prior to them going Chap 7.

Do the names..Frank Shelton (aircraft sales), David Little(DPE) or Jeff Henshaw ring a bell with you? Dave did most of my rating checkrides and Frank helped me build time by letting me ferry airplanes around for him.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah, the Purple Crackle. When you absolutely, positively, undoubtably must drink til 5AM.

You probably remember the Hush Puppy too.

And Lambert's. What a place. It's unbelievable the number of people that line up to eat chicken-fried steak and white beans. Every time I eat there I make myself sick I eat so much. If you leave that place and you're still hungry it's your own darn fault.

It's pretty funny, they have signs on the Interstate advertising that "Norm's cooking up rolls just for you!". What the billboards DON'T say is that Norm (Norm Lambert, the founder) put a bullet in his brain about six or seven years ago and has been six feet under ever since. So if Norm's cooking, I ain't eating.
grin.gif
But they do have great home cooking.

Hmm, nope, can't say as I've heard of any of the people you named. But I do all the crop dusting in that area so I know exactly where you're writing about.

Just to make everyone else feel good.

I turned 60 my last birthday.

But, I still fly about 100 hrs a month, so age don't slow you down unless you want it to.

You da man!

The old crop duster I bought my first two Ag-Cats from was 72 when I bought him out. He'd been crop-dusting for 42 years. And he helped me out some too, so make it 43.

And I LOVE your sig line. Nothing in the world like seeing the sparks flying like fireworks. Hehe, talk about ruining your whole day....

agcatman, you make crop dusting look cooler to me than it already did!

Seriously, that seems like a great way to make your path in life--I'm glad to hear operators like yourself are thriving...

surprisingly enough, there doesn't appear to be too many 'dusters around my urban homeland, so I'm looking forward to hearing more about a side of flying from you that I don't get to experience firsthand.

Driving through Nebraska this summer I saw two guys pull up at the pump next to me with a beat-up pickup and an AgCat folded up in a trailer in tow...I couldn't have been more envious!

oh yeah, you ever fly into Salem, MO (K33)?
I did the survey work for that airport when I was in school, I often wonder how it turned out...

Hey Agcatman
I must admit that cropdusting sounds a fascinating career. I would love to become an agpilot. Could you please write a peice on what its like to be a crop duster? I would love to know what you would do in an average day, also I would love to know your path to the cockpit. What steps did you follow? and maybe you could give me some pointers on how to enter this field.

Also maybe Doug could have a peice on this profession in his careers section?

I look forward to your comments.

Regards Ryan

I've got it bad to fly for US Airways

[/ QUOTE ]

Hopefully not too bad. I doubt they'll be around much longer... and the current lowest seniority pilot I heard has been there since '83... not a great hiring environment.

Perhaps shoot for Southwest? Or Mesa.

Ha ha, just kidding on the Mesa part.

Dave Seigel thinks if he cuts costs a little more, the airline will survive. Methinks he's hoping for a buyout from relatively stronger carrier, but I seriously doubt USAir's survival.

I know a guy who left Delta to work for USAir because he got sick of commuting from PIT to CVG. During his first week there, he saw how things operated there, called Delta and begged his chief pilot to come back.

Luckily, they had mercy and took him. That was mid 2001. What a lucky duck.

Ouch. What does that do to your seniority?

I'm sorry sir, you've stepped out of the line. Please go to the back and start again...

He was able to keep his seniority. In fact, he's about 10 numbers senior to me.

I think so to. Man, what an idiot, but he's a lucky idiot albeit reformed.

I'm not fond of commuting either, but I'm not about to leave a stable job at Delta for America West!

Wouldn't stand a chance against "Michael Blitzen Schumacher"

Well, they (US Airways) are the hub out here at PIT where i am...first flew with them when i was 3 weeks old..but, how long do you think it will be before they fold? Also, i meant i would prefer to fly for US Airways, but i have absolutely no gripe with AA, UAL, or particularly Delta....when i lived in Texas, we could only fly out of our local airport on Delta props with only 8 passengers! I wonder if Doug is familiar with the Killeen area?, where Fort Hood is located? But thanks for the feedback!

OK who convened the "oval, keep turning left" crowd...

By the way, "Michael Blitzen Schumacher" turns left and right.
