Oh United

In this case, we did adjust the schedule, quite massively. Other carriers then added because they thought we were "pulling out" and thought they saw a competitive opportunity. So.. that really is how it works.

It's ok man, you guys are going to hire a ton. You don't need to be angry other airlines are picking up the scraps of an airport you basically own.

C5 is ending (rather UAL is ending) our tenure in EWR. No more 145’s after October 31st, which no one is sad about except our EWR based who live in EWR or close by. I will not miss it, but if I wind up at B6 which I’m hoping for, I could be there again nearly as much since they are opening an EWR base. Damn irony….
So where will C5 be? IAD?

So C5 is getting rid of 145s at EWR, or everywhere? If everywhere, what will you be flying? 175s?

No no, we keep the 145, we just lose EWR.UAL has us in IAH and DEN mostly, with IAD being our smallest base.

Nearly anything that had an XJT or TSA 145 on it before is Commutair’s now.

It is, just responding to Chasen's golden dream of airlines being reasonable about this scheduling stuff.

Knowing @ChasenSFO, his ‘golden dreams’ most likely have nothing to do with airplanes. Or anything any sane person wants to even think about. LOL

Hearkening back to the OP.

“The head of United Airlines Holdings Inc. apologized to US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg after the carrier publicly faulted regulators for worsening flight delays.

Scott Kirby, United’s chief executive officer, said he reached out to clarify comments in a staff memo earlier this month. In it, a United executive said half of its delay minutes and the majority of cancellations recently were the result of actions by the Federal Aviation Administration to manage traffic and flight capacity.

That prompted a sharply worded rebuttal from the agency, which accused United of deceptively conflating traffic-control actions with steps taken in response to poor weather.

Kirby didn’t back down from the broader claim that flight disruptions have been largely out of the airline’s control, but said the specifics of United’s argument were misconstrued.”

The comment, which was made during the April 2022 Q1 earning call included:

“The FAA has rules that limit the airport [EWR] to 79 operations per hour, and they are letting airlines violate those rules ... It’s unheard of behavior for me for the FAA to just let people … brazenly break the rules.

The two biggest offenders are Spirit Airlines and JetBlue. Spirit Airlines and JetBlue [customers] are paying the biggest price ... It’s a disaster for their customers because they’re flying more flights [than] the airport can handle.

Unfortunately, our employees and our customers are collateral damage to that.”

I wish he wouldnt back down.

This is in large part the FAA's fault for failing to properly staff their facilties. All of the Reagan era replacements are retiring and the agency still hasn't recovered. The cans been kicked down the road for over 30 years, and things are finally coming to a head, at least at my facility. I know one controller at my facility has resigned from the agency in the last week, saying he just cant do this amount of OT anymore and can make this kind of money without completely sacrificing his personal life. A handful more are considering resigning to sit out for a year, and then apply directly to the facility they actually want to be at, since thats about the only way to actually "transfer" as a controller today.

The situation at ZJX is mirrored at many of the Level 12 ARTCC and TRACONS across the country, they just got the publicity. My facility is 75% staffed, we're all on 6 day work weeks with no end in sight, and we're all burnt out and exhausted. The union is nowhere to be found, so if the airlines want to raise a stink and try and get things changed, thats great in my eyes.

AFAIK, the FAA is still trying to claim there is no staffing shortage at their ATC facilities. Tell that to the 300 hours of OT I've already worked this year. Its a complete joke.

Yeah… let’s also not forget how hard UAL lobbied to eliminate slot control at EWR and when they got their way, immediately added 80 daily flights to an airport that was already at capacity.

Oh, and also like that time when we asked for a GDP to be removed because the weather didn’t wind up being as bad as forecast, and UAL called HQ and asked for the GDP to stay in place because they’d already worked around it and didn’t want anyone else to get in early.

Go • yourself UAL.

75% gets you 6 day weeks? I’ve never seen 75% staffing. I’m at 472 hours ot so far this year.
Just out of curiosity, what does that look like? In a perfect world are you guys 5 days on 2 days off 8 hours a day? If so, you're OT adds up to about 60 days of OT. If you figure a normal month has 8 days off, your OT is the equivalent of 10 extra days a month or every weekend plus 2 days. That's brutal man.

The FAA loves tripping over their balls at every opportunity. My brother graduated from riddle back in 2009 through their CTI program. Dude wanted to be and would have been great at ATC.

Never got hired by the FAA. In fact most of the people in his class didn’t either. Never got selected to go to OKC. He now runs the fraud department of a bank headquartered in Portland and loves to dunk on Riddle at every opportunity tho.

I'm not close or privy to your industry's machinations, but as an outsider, it kinda seems like the majors are shouting "if you're currently employed by a regional, it's time to run (not walk) away".

Thoughts?

Scott Kirby is back to beating on the FAA at EWR. This time he's blaming reduced operational capacity on a suspicion of insufficient staffing.
