Oh No!! Another changing careers post! This one is different, I swear!

Ok, not really that different....

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster...

Like most, I've always wanted to be an airline pilot but continuiously got talked out of it by parents, teachers, etc. Now I'm 31 and ready to roll.

My questions are the same as most - full time academy? part time FBO? Theoretically, I can afford the full time academy by doing a re-fi / equity line on my house (gotta love the So Cal housing market).

So in 15 words or less, what is the best, cheapest, fastest and most foolproof way to get my hours and get hiried?? Just kidding, but I am looking to sort of fasttrack my training. I have done some research on RAA, Flight Safety Academy, DCA, but all these are in Fla and would require a temp re-loc. There is an outfit in San Diego - San Diego Flight Training Intl which offers a Jet Connect program in connection with Delta, but I haven't heard anything (positive or negative) about that.

Also, does the fact that I'm a girl benefit me at all when it comes to hiring? I have never played the "girl" card before, but do airlines have "quotas" (and I hate using that term or even thinking about it) for hiring?

BTW, I'm in So Cal, so any CFI's out there near SNA please let me know!!

Thanks

welcome to the boards!

you might wanna check out ATP's too. sorry i m not too up on the career changing subject, but the less debt you get in the better.

btw, how did you come up with yodelinpig as a username?

I agree with the ATP thing. Or, depending on your job/life situation, you could go to a local FBO and tell them you want to train full-time. I did my PPL in 4 weeks this way, and my instructor loved me because he knew he had a full-time student. I flew twice a day, 4 days a weeks for 4 weeks. Loved it.

disclaimer *the following is just my opinion, take it or leave it, I don't care but it is just this one girl's opinion*

As far as the 'girl' card goes, speaking as a girl, I wouldn't play it. I've seen too many "I'm a female pilot" girls who think they deserve a break for the sole reason they're a girl. Just be a pilot, a good pilot, and let your actions, experience & flying abilities carry you through your career!

[/end opinion]

I'm so sorry to hear that, Yodelin'! .... but, welcome to the club brother.

I, too, gradumatated with dat dere fancy Poli Sci degree en route to a prosperous career as an attorney. Stopped along the way to be a Paralegal and decide what kind of attorney I wanted to be and discovered I didn't want to be an attorney.

So, here I am - 39, just finished my Commercial ratings after two years of training at a local FBO and working full time flying a desk at a law firm. I'm about two months shy of completing my initial CFI and then it's on to instructing and God only knows what from there.

Botttom line: it can be done. Do what's best for you.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

do you actually have a potbellied pig? John and I are thinking about getting one when we (one day) move in together and (one day) have money. Are they really expensive to take care of? clean? do they run around and reak havoc on your house/apt or his he pretty well behaved? Did you ahve to go through any special means to get him in terms of having a pig in your house? (is it zone for a pig and whatnot like that?)

heh, also welcome to the boards!!

j/k. check into ATP. www.allatps.com. they have locations in sacremento and riverside. i can gurantee you they will be the fastest and cheapest. you will also come out of the program with over 100 hrs of multi engine time. as far as being a girl, it doesn't hurt. airlines do/have hired women with lower flight times. not every airline, and not for every woman, but like i said it does/has happened. not sure how you would "play the card" but some airlines may play it for you. best of luck!
