Oh Kirby....

Meh. For United? That’s not leadership. That’s called optics. A CEO’s time and efficiency is zero if he’s in the Sewark throwing bags.

CEO paycuts? Also meh. What’s the other components of their pay? Stock options, stock ownership, bonuses, etc.

I agree that the what people are largely taking issue with is optics. But to the leadership point, maybe he did have some very important meeting somewhere that was required to resolve the meltdown. That, I doubt, but it is possible. In the absence of that, I wouldn't suggest "throwing bags" would be a good use of his time. That would be the definition of pure optics, and useful to nobody. What might be useful, would be getting out on the line and checking in on his troops. There is a fine line between leadership and optics, and I've seen the latter abused plenty by senior mil "leadership", but actual leadership sometimes does also involve checking in with your peeps, in person, when it counts. I've got no idea what he had going on that day, but it does sound to me like a missed opportunity to breathe some calm and confidence into some part of the operation. When everything is melting down, having the boss there with you, saying things like "here is what we are doing", or asking "what can I do to help you", goes a long way towards building morale in a tough time. Just my .02c
