So now we’re down as far as 50% from 99%
Again, without a source are you just pulling this out of thin air?
There’s a big difference between depression and clinical depression.
Which is kinda full circle to the stigma that any mental health issue = danger to society.
If I missed it that you were specifically talking about clinical depression that’s my bad.
Read the thread. Of course I’m talking about clinical depression.
I challenge you to find one person with diagnosed clinical depression that hasn’t had SI. I challenge you to find a mental health professional that has had a long-term client with a clinical depression diagnosis that didn’t experience SI. I have two PhD level psychotherapists in my family and they have never seen a case of severe depression without SI.
Beyond that, ask a mental health professional what they think of these studies.
The big problems with SI studies is data is self-reported by patients. No major study has explored case notes on a large scale.
How bad is this kinda methodology? Look back at the first decade of the AIDS crisis. Male patients were asked how they might have been exposed to the virus. They were given the following options: Sex with another man, IV drug use, blood transfusion, sex with a female prostitute, or travel to Haiti. Sex with a female prostitute was the most common answer and it distorted our understanding about risk factors. My favorite 80’s joke - what’s the hardest part about contracting AIDS? Convincing your parents you're Haitian.
Depression has touched my life. The revelations of my two family members in mental health, the death of friends, years of volunteer work in substance abuse treatment, relationship with somebody with depression.
Right or wrong, mental health professionals assume that there has been a history of SI in cases of clinical depression. Avoiding admissions of SI allows many individuals to avoid mandatory custody or family pressure for immediate treatment … or banishment from the cockpit.
Whatever the number is, there’s a high correlation between diagnosed clinical depression and SI. If you want the FAA to change, we need to be honest about the facts. The FAA requests all records. Did you admit to SI when you were 19?
Until the FAA is ready to let go of their misunderstandings about depression, suicidal ideation, suicide, and homicide, nobody should trust the FAA.
I wrote the script. Depart from the script and you are rolling the dice.
