Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 Strikes Deer, Airport Shut Down

- On Thursday, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 struck three deer upon landing at Kodiak Airport in Alaska, causing the airport to shut down and the aircraft to be grounded for repairs.

- The incident occurred during the first flight of the day from Anchorage, with no passengers harmed. The aircraft is scheduled to operate a ferry flight back to Anchorage on Saturday morning.

- Kodiak Airport, a public and military-use facility, serves as the only link to the mainland for the island's population of 6,000, with Alaska Airlines operating three daily flights.

- Wildlife strikes are on the rise due to increasing commercial flights and rebounding wildlife populations, with incidents ranging from bird strikes to collisions with larger animals like kangaroos, capybaras, alligators, coyotes, and rabbits.

- Alaska Airlines, with many flights to and from Alaska, may be at greater risk of wildlife strikes than most airlines, with a notable incident in 2020 involving a brown bear strike on a Boeing 737-700 aircraft.

Yikes, good thing it happened on landing and not takeoff. Deer are no joke. One of the scariest moments of my career was taking off in a G-IV from Morgantown, WV at night, with a very high profile pop music band in the back on the way to a concert. Right as the FO called V1 two deer appeared in my left field of view and darted across the runway. I rotated at Vr fully expecting to feel an impact or two but luckily we just barely missed them. At least the flight department manager had a good sense of humor about it, because when I called him the next day and told him the story he said "oh well, if you'd hit them just come back around and land, then go to the passengers and ask who wants some fresh venison. I call dibs on the backstraps". Unfortunately there's not much you can do when you're barreling down the runway and they decide to run out in front of you.

Id be interested in hearing about where you live and how many deer stamps they hand out every year.

Ha. I'm down in Cherry Hill, NJ. Some times I see 10-15 hanging out eating/resting at 2am in random spots or on the shoulders of on-ramps and highways

I'm right next to you in Voorhees. They're everywhere...I seem to see them most around Springdale/Evesham/Kresson Rds. I'm also hyper alert on the lookout driving home from NY late at night (I'm based up there for another month...) along the Turnpike after exit 6 and the 295 on ramp from 73. I've seen my share...

Pretty sure copious deer are everywhere. They have been at least everywhere I've lived, other than maybe the Deep South/FL panhandle, but that was probably more due to where I specifically lived than them not being around.

What's up neighbor! Yeah man I drive down Springdale by the JCC or whatever and see tons of them there. As well as the 295 on ramp to go north and sometimes on the turnpike before the state trooper barracks.

If you don't have one, I highly recommend the Hopkins deer alert. If you want to meet up one day and see how it is, it's amazing and it pretty much makes the deer stop where they are and just look around at the sound instead of running towards you

Interesting. I've never heard of that system....I'll have to look into that.

We feed the deer out in the green belt behind our property. I occasionally see one that didn't realize trying to cross the road is a bad idea. Back in Socal that sort of road kill would sit and rot for a couple of days, it's gone in a couple of hours around here. I'm not sure if that's the city or the citizens cleaning up the roads.

I grew up in Sussex County, NJ which has among the highest population densities of white tailed deer in the lower 48. In the 5 years between getting my drivers license and leaving NJ I hit 3 deer and had 3 others run into the side of my vehicle while driving.
