Oh Alaska(n)

Hell, I have a really good friend on our negotiating team and I dare don’t bother him with questions. We just talk cats and science fiction.
Ok Sci-Fi I get. How long of a conversation can someone have about cats. Besides laying in the sun or them licking their privates in front of you, what else is there to chat about?

Our union ask seems pretty reasonable and the only way to get the operation back on track.

Reasonable to the point of still keeping our work rules miles behind everyone else's. "Better than what exists now" isn't a high bar. Nothing in that proposal will stop anyone with an offer from DAL/UAL/FDX from leaving - the current work rules at those companies are better than our proposed changes.

You’re not wrong bro…

I still think pilots will be pilots. No matter how good the Alaska contract we get, in this hiring environment, why would you come to a domestic only airline with one fleet type? Sorry, but younger kids are aiming for the big 3.

You could sign the ALPA ask tonight, it still won’t stop the attrition to the big 3.

Work rules. Hell, I would have stayed at SkyWest forever if they offered me any schedule control or QOL.

Alaska was my dream job, but I’m mostly ok with how things turned out getting turned down.

On the bright side, they’ve hired almost all of the good pilots from SkyWest’s west-coast bases at this point. I’ve typed my little sharky fingers to the bone issuing congrats to lucky peeps. ❤️

Any plans to apply again once the Roller Derby season(s) end?

Every day I’ve checked last week, including today they have canceled 30-40 flights. Affecting nearly 3000 passengers. It seems like a terrible way to destroy a brand. However if you hate pilots that much eventually it’s going to come back to bite you in this hiring environment.

Looking at reserve staffing a little later in April things have gotten slightly better staffing wise. However two friends who are FOs senior to me have told me they have a class date at Delta and have not given notice yet. They cited all concerns noted on this thread as their reasons for leaving.

All of the upgrade classes canceling is likely making the staffing levels look a bit better, the last I heard at least 7 upgrade classes had been canceled.

What’s the likelihood of AS getting PBS and do you think it would help or hurt QOL? Sounds like the current scheduling work rules are not that great.

When we went from line bidding to PBS at QX, my QOL was drastically improved. Granted I was a Captain when that happened, so it didn't "hurt" me too much. I would have disliked it as an FO, since I bid with LCA's to get trips off with pay.

That's just a rules thing. You don't have to have language that allows the company to withhold flying from the FO bids.

The thing I've always heard about PBS is that "it's only as good as your work rules". Still, NavBlue PBS (at Horizon) has been great for my schedule. Even when I was fairly junior, I was able to get at least 85% of what I wanted.

Now, if I could only drop a trip now and then... I'm tired of seeing "Denied... Insufficient reserve coverage".

I’ve used PBS and line bidding now. I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed but I’ve made the following observations.

Line bidding takes a lot longer, like hours and hours of actual bidding even with a third party website. In addition the bidding window is weeks longer than with PBS.

Work rules are the only thing that makes a difference.

None of the above matter if your airline isn’t staffed properly.
