Off-Airport Landing

If I ever have an incident or accident, the media will NEVER hear a word out of me but "Get out of my way!" or "No comment."

How bout telling them that things do happen in GA, but it is still very safe. Put a good spin on it!! If not they are going to screw something up in the story. If you talk to them it puts YOU much more in control of the story and the perception of general aviation.

That is just my two cents worth.

When I had my OFL, I put the best "spin" on it that I could. And it was weird, because the flight school I was with got a mild jump in folks wanting to learn how to fly.

I love how she sent the police helicopter over to you when he had no idea what was going on.

Controller: "Police 76F, Houston Tower [break] 310, you're cleared to enter the Houston Class B. He said he was just going to put down in his present position. Heading 310, your cleared into the Houston Class B airspace, altimeter 30.00, wind calm."

Police 76F:  76F I'm sorry, I wasn't calling you. I didn't need to come into the B.....

Controller: Police 76F, there is a helicopter.... a Cessna 172, who is having flight problems, he's getting ready to land in his present position. Fly heading 310.

Police 76F: Roger that, 310 for 76F.

Cut her a break, she was problably pretty nervous too. No Controller wants to lose an aircraft for any reason on their watch.

Umm... I wasn't giving her a hard time? Sounds like she did a great job to me. My post was geared more toward her telling the Police Helicopter he was cleared into the Bravo and to start heading that direction and there for a couple of moments he had no idea what was going on.

Wow, I would keep this around for future employment. "Want to see how I handled an emergency? Here's the audio."

Ice cool man, great job.

:clap:Great job! Good thinking sticking close to a landing site while you tried for altitude! I'm incredibly curious myself to hear the mechanical diagnosis when you find out....

I actually got word earlier today what the final diagnosis was. Both of instake and exhaust valves got stuck. It ended up completely blowing apart the intake valve (that's where all of the oil was leaving the cylinder) and bowing the exhaust so bad that it couldn't function. Our mechanic has been working with GA aircraft for 50 years and he said has never heard of that happening. Lucky me! :) As we speak, the cylinder is enroute to a "cylinder company" to see if they can make some sense of why it happened.

@Okie: I agree with you. I think she did a great job just getting on the ball with the police helicopter. She didn't ask, she acted. I am so very thankful for that!

P.S. I'm trying to find that darn grandma story!

I saw the link to your transmission with Houston approach on my companies forums, and I've gotta admit, it's hilarious knowing that you're ok.

The way it reads make it sound like you were hanging around with a half dead engine, tryin' to figure out the best place to land so you could find yourself some Whataburger when you finally ended up landing off airport. You were so smooth as to tell the controller and anybody else on frequency that this was a normal thing, and not really that big of a deal. Land in a field? Hey, the plane's fine! Police helicopter coming to get me? Pretty darn smmooooooooth!

Well done putting it down in such grand fashion! Glad you walked away from it. The beer's are on me next time I'm in Houston.
