NYC people at or considering UND

Hey folks I was just wondering if there is anyone from the nyc or new york state area at or consdering UND. I visited UND last year, was going to go, but then decided Grand Forks was too in the middle of nowhere for me. I decided to go to SUNY Farmingdale for aviation and that was a HUGE mistake. I'm now goin to school near wher I live in Manhattan and doing my private at KISP on Long Island. I was thinking about going to UND in Fall 08 or summer with my private (I'm on track for an April checkride), among other options including FBO flying and college or maybe ATP. If any New Yorkers have any UND related stuff or experience, or want to talk about Tri-State area Long Island, Connecticut, upstate New York, or New Jersey flying please share so I can help make a decision here.

Graduated Highschool in the POughkeepsie area and am in my 4th semester here doing commercial aviation.

Hey, I have lived near the Parkchester area of the Bronx for 6 years before I moved to Queens. Great to see someone else from the Bronx on here. I too was looking at SUNY Farmingdale as an option but decided against it. I came to UND because I was more interested in the academics, the great facilities, and getting away from home. What I didn't pay too much attention to, was where I was getting away to. The first year here is always the worst because we are in an environment that is so remote. Public transportation is non-existent here, if you don't have a license, get one soon. Entertainment options are very limited also. You will meet many great people through the aviation program. There is less diversity outside of the department however, not just in race, but experiences, world knowledge, and culture. If you do make it out here, you definitely will appreciate a lot of the things you took for granted.

Curious question, what are the rates out of ISP for airplane rental? I need to take the family and friends up sometimes.

And I'm currently in Queens, NY ...damn there's some good Columbian restaurants 2 blocks south of me!...on Northern Blvd, and then further south on Roosevelt.

UND has a good flight training program - the flight training IS increasing in cost at a higher rate than when I started. Something to keep in mind. Also note how horrible of a place Grand Forks is to live, but if you make some really good friends it will help you get through the 4 years.
 
Arite guys thanks for all of the info about life in the great state of North Dakota and flight training at UND. It's great to see I wouldn't be the only New Yorker out there. Maybe going out there is what it takes to get a real good aviation program and education.

GOOD, no GREAT call not going to Farmingdale. It is a freakin zoo over there. I recently found out they lost all their instructors, had no contingency plan, and so no one was able to do flight training over the long SUNY/CUNY break, and flight training for Spring 2008 semester is up in the air. It's a shame they can't make it work over there becuase they have 14 new Piper Warriors in their fleet, but it's just run by stupid people, and the one seminole they have no one is allowed or abl to fly. Good call on the driver's license, I do have one, and I don't think I'd consider going anywhere (much less Grand Forks, ND) without one. To answer your question, the rental rates for KISP vary. At the place where I currently fly it is 120 per hour for an Alarus CH 2000. It varies, but that is the lowest I've seen it. Keep in mind however, that you should look around for those rates because they have about a million FBO's in Long Island airports like Islip, Farmingdale Republic, Brookhaven, etc., and I've heard there are some cheap rental rates in Bridgeport and Groton, CT.

You will find this probably wherever you go... especially in ND! :D

Just kidding, well not completely kidding, but New Yorkers seem to do fine at UND.

It's on the rise but still isn't terrible (Compared to many places, not all).

Yesterday I payed 106.35/hr including the fuel surcharge of 7.35/hr for a Glass warrior...
 
Anything under 120 or 130 an hour seems like winning the lottery to me that seems to be the goin rate around here but you gotta figure flight training, along with everything else is probably cheaper anywhere outside of new york. What we usually do here is fly to conecticut to top off becuase the gas is 2 bucks cheaper.

Yeah, everything is at a premium if you are anywhere near the city. I probably might end up upstate for a cheaper rental. But I will look around FRG and ISP and see what they have to offer.
 
haha, i love this thread. as a und grad from iowa i laughed my ass off at my friend from long island when he'd bring out the parka when the leaves started changing colors in gf, he has since moved back to the balmy climate out east.
 
yeah i went to visit UND last winter and i brought like a north face and a hody with me and i was like yeah ill be fine ill be arite i got outta the plane it was like negative 10 i almost ran clear back to ny lol
 
Oh -10 isn't that bad. It's kind of funny a year ago when temperatures dropped to like 5 in Oregon I was complaining about the cold. Now it gets to 0 and I'm like hurray!! :nana2:

Nah, Farmingdale sucks and always will as far as I saw when I was there. Don't make the same mistake I did, go to UND, don't look back, and maybe I'll see you there. By the way category, are you from manhattan? What high school?

I tell people I am from Manhattan, since everybody knows Manhattan, besides its right across the bridge but for real I live in Fort Lee and go to their public high school.
 
arite i can see why someone would lie about being from jersey (sorry had to get it in there) but at lest you're close to the bride and the city and stuff like that. We should keep in touch about UND anyhow. Did you start flight training in jersey yet?
 
hey most of my time I spend in the city. If I say I am from jersey people will be like w/e since I live in a small town that nobody knows unlike Manhattan. I think ill just start flight training in UND. How about you?
