NWA Ground Crews Walk Off The Job at MSP

Don't blame the rampers, blame management. Management is ultimately responsible for the service they provide their customers. If the rampers strike, it's because management has failed to keep them happy. Like someone said, supply and demand. Obviously, they want more money or better working conditions or both. If they don't get it, then the airline can't provide a service. Simple supply and demand.

No legitimate teachers union is what I should have said - i.e., no NEA. Texas teachers (in metro areas anyways) make better than the national average, with some of the lowest cost of living in the country.

So what makes a union "legitmate?" In my opinion (and that of Webster's), I'd say the teacher's unions in TX qualify. You sure you're not just backtracking now that the half-thought out arguement has been shot down? It's not always about pay. Look at the health care situation LoadMaster posted about. Sounds to me like the teachers have formed unions in TX more for the benefits side than the pay side of things. To me, that's legit.

Uhh, I meant "legit" not as "legitimate" but more like MC Hammer's lyrics in "Too Legit to Quit", you know? :) :sarcasm:

Try again.

The Texas State Teachers Association is affiliated with the NEA. Oh, and the other one? You know, the AFT is a pretty powerful union. And did you see what the URL was for the website -- seemed like it ended in aft.org to me!

My understanding is that it is illegal for teachers, along with other public employees, to strike in Texas. There may be unions, but if there is no ability to strike they likely have little power and are not "legitimate." I've never seen such a strike, anyways. I agree that unions are less prevalent in Texas than in a place like New Jersey, where there is no self-service gasoline.

There are other self-help actions other than striking that would make the union legitimate. Sick calls are totally legal, but what do you do when 90% of the teachers call in sick, coincidentally, on the same day? It could have been an epidemic. If they all have doctor's notes, what can you do?

Even airline pilots can't strike until a stack of hoops have been jumped through. Even then, the President can say "No, you can't strike." We're still considered legitimate unions, though.

Most employers have a view of their employees that tries to look out for their interests (believe it or not), ...

Not.

If you believe Northwest management gives a rat's patoot about their employees, I've got a nice piece of beachfront property in North Dakota I'd like to sell you. There's a bridge in Arizona that comes with it.

Northwest cares so much about its employees that it compiled a booklet with 101 ways to save money while on furlough. Included among the suggestions are "buy spare parts for your car at the junkyard", "take a shorter shower", and "Don't be shy about pulling something you like out of the trash." "Shop at discount clothing stores", "Buy, sell, and trade clothes at consignment shops", "Cut the kids' hair yourself", and "search the internet for freebies" are other nuggets in the compassionate list.

Let's see... I'm a Northwest employee, and I know that if I'm furloughed, I'll be advised to take up dumpster diving. Do I think management will listen to me?

On the other hand, do I think management will notice a few thousand disgruntled passengers that take notice that they can't get from Point A to Point B without my services?

Is the picture coming into better focus now?

Well, actually, it's more like, "No, you can't strike yet." After the last hoop has been honored, nobody can stop it.
