Ntsb National Ban On Cell Phone Use

We need much tougher driving tests and more public transportation that doesn't take a phD to figure out.
last time I checked on "most" public transportation systems"Gas" still means Go and Breaks still mean "Stop". Though teaching the car/public transport equivlant of ADM might be hard, thought that being said many bus drivers make more then many FO's for regionals. But the Bus driver is the "Captain" of said people mover.

As for increased driver training, nice idea, not realistic. The automobile is how the vast majority of people who cook your burgers and empty your trash get around. If they can't afford to drive, your burger doesn't get cooked and your trash piles up. Europe has sane mass-transit and we most assuredly do not. To be fair that's largely because distances are so much greater.

All we need is more government to save us from ourselves!

My daily driver pushes upward of 440 horsepower on less than $1,000 worth of modifications. They have a high po limit/complex (ie manual) for pilots, why not for drivers? I know how it can be to end up sideways due to power mismanagement. My fiance is free to row the gears on my 92 Geo all the wants. She thinks she can master the beast, but no, she'd be "behind the ship" as it were with plenty of power to kill herself over and over again hence why I don't toss her the keys. Coming from learning on a car with manual steering and manual drum brakes, yeah thats saving you from yourself.

I don't want the government to save me from myself, but I would like for it to save me from some soccer mom or suspender-wearing bozo yakking away on their phone instead of driving the car. If it's so important that you just absolutely have to talk right now, pull over.

A ban won't do much good.

With in an increase in bans, one would assume the number of auto accidents would decrease rapidly. In some states, however, that has not been the case. In California, Louisiana, Minnesota and Washington, accidents have increased since those states enacted a ban on texting behind the wheel, according to a Highway Loss Data Institute (HDLI) study. "Texting bans haven't reduced crashes at all," said Adrian Lund, president of both HLDI and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. "In a perverse twist, crashes increased in three of the four states we studied after bans were enacted. LINK

I'd also like to see cars that won't start until you breathalyze.

Think of the saving that improving standards could bring. Replace every stop sign with a yield and fuel economy improves. Replace traffic lights with roundabouts and save both the power for the lights and even more fuel economy.

Currently what few roundabouts exist here feature idiots that think stopping is involved.

Keep turning right on a red. That part is good.

I love roundabouts now.

If an entire nation can take the time to learn how to use their digital cable box, they can take a few moments and learn about a roundabout.

You should check out the circle at the entrance to ACY. They "fixed' it by making it worse...only in NJ.

And I wonder why everyone is so out of shape about these recommendations. Everyone knows how few are actually acted upon. cough3407cough.

Yes they did, for years we heard how much better it was going to be, my first trip around it last month was a serious WTF moment!

Should have an ACY M+G at the bar there. Could sit outside and watch the madness, I've already been told of someone driving the wrong way through the loop. It could be fun.

I don't go there any more since they lost the strippers.

100% preventable. PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN AND DRIVE THE CAR/BUS. Why is this so difficult?

I honestly don't know people need to be so accessable. I look forward to my drive to/from work because it's just me and the radio. I talk all day at home, all day at work, the car is pretty much my only time to actually enjoy some quiet.

Good thing I have the government there to protect me from myself!

I can think of one reason why your bold statement is a terrible idea. Had a friend who was in an accident and needed to make a call while in the car. Unfortunately he did not make it, but if this device was in place he would not have been able to even make the call.

We live in a connected and frenzied world. So what if you can't make a call, you still have GPS, satellite radio, CD's, DVD's, iPods, food, other passengers, other drivers and yourself.

I would also like to see a study of driving speed when on and off a phone. I would be willing to bet, that a driver on a phone is driving slower than a driver off the phone. What is more dangerous? There has to be a reason that in the states that banned texting accidents went up instead of down. What caused that?
