Ntsb National Ban On Cell Phone Use

For all the suggestions they make for us to follow they finally suggested a ban on text messaging in cars with the exception of EOM hands free equipment. How long is it before they suggest a ban on the EFB in the cockpit?

They aren't going to take away EFB's or any IPADs in the cockpit. The whole purpose is to help pilots, thinking they would go away is absurd

I wish they would ban those portable GPS units from drivers that don't know how to use the darn things. This has be be a much bigger problem than cell phone usage. Ever get behind someone that doesn't know how to use the GPS? slow down, hit brakes, re-calculate, hit brakes again, slow down some more, it goes on and on and on.

This is a training issue. The driving standard is poor because the required standard is poor. Start having a real driving test that involves more than a lap of the parking lot and safety will improve.

I can't agree more! I would have hated it when I was 16, but I think it would make a world of difference now. We need to treat driving like the serious task it is rather than a rite-of-passage that happens on your 16th birthday.

Really? I would have loved it if we had a REAL training course for driving. All I got to do was drive my instructor to do his errands.

And a ban on cellphones in the cockpit? Really? Gonna make it awfully difficult to pick up those IFR clearances for those of us that need to call while we're in the plane.

I sure hope they don't ban cell phones while driving! I love playing Angry Birds on my drive to school and work. Gotta do something to keep me occupied....

I would have hated it. I didn't even take driver's ed. I lived far enough from school so I got to have a school permit when I was 14.I drove to and from school every day for two years, with no real training.

As you stated earlier....the problem is people think it's their God given right to get a license to drive a 3500lb vehicle capable of going 100 mph just because they turn 16. We need much tougher driving tests and more public transportation that doesn't take a phD to figure out.

How would airline pilots get to the airport for their flights?

I'd much prefer the European model of driving schools although I know it isn't as feasible here. A piece of me dies inside when I see people bump into parked cars because they can't parallel park (not required on the test in most places), take up two lanes because they're on the phone (hey that's legal here!) or stare cow eyed as they roll backwards down a hill presumably muttering to themselves about that cute third pedal and wondering what its for (hey pass the test in an automatic, get the green light on a manual! Its not any different, don't mind that grinding noise!).
