NTSB investigating UAL/SFO near miss

"The rules for an RA is that you can ignore it to the extent of not taking the action, but cannot go in the opposite direction of the RA regardless of circumstances."

Where does it say that? Doesn't say that in my book, but maybe yours is different.

Re: UAL pilot to SFO TWR after TCAS RA: "We need to talk!"

Why would you lie about having someone in sight...
...because if you say traffic in sight, you can get the visual approach rather than another vector. I do not condone that behavior (in all seriousness), but I have noticed that the sooner you see the other traffic, the sooner they give you the visual clearance.

I'm just a CFI here and have no experience in larger aircraft. That being said the smaller plane was told to pass behind the 777, correct? At some point in passing behind the 777 there is no way the pilots could have seen that aircraft. I could be wrong but isn't it hard to see the wings out of some airliners let alone the tail. I dont know where in "passing behind" the 777 the RA went off, but there is a good chance the 777 pilots had no chance of seeing that GA aircraft.

I understand "Why", but I dont understand why anyone would every think it was a good idea to call traffic that you dont have just to get about a 20 second headstart on a clearance you're going to get anyways.

Me either...you asked why, so I offered the only (albeit not good) reason one would do something stupid like agree to maintain visual with something they don't see. :dunno:I have no idea why someone in this guys situation would say he saw a huge airplane but didn't...except maybe he didn't want to get vectored out of B airspace?

I have no plausable explanation for that.

Re: UAL pilot to SFO TWR after TCAS RA: "We need to talk!"

The story I saw said they were both in a 4 G negative dive.

Yeah, but you forgot to mention that the pilot in the Cessna was "communicating", hence his attempt to get with what would you say? About 3 meters? He got a great Polaroid...

"...because I was inverted."

"You're dangerous."

seperation in class B between IFR/VFR VFR/VFR and not useing visual seperation,

1 if both A/C are less than 14500 lb and VFR you only need target resolution ( green between ).

2 if one is IFR and one VFR but not a heavy/b757 or 2 VFR with one A/C 14500lb or heaver but neither a heavy/b757, 500" or 1 1/2 miles.

3 if one A/C is a heavy/ b757 and the small or large is crossing below/behind the heavy/b757 and is VFR you need 1000" or if less than 1000" below 5 miles.if above or ahead of the heavy/b757 500" or 1 1/2 miles.

Woops look what I started. Again.

Jordan, you mean I'm not the first person to quote Top Gun and paste the locker room scene on an aviation forum frequented by pilots? :sarcasm:

I'm catching on that this practice was at one time funny, but has turned into a fad and has become :deadhorse::deadhorse::deadhorse:.

In that case, let me close with the following:
