NTSB INVESTIGATING AN INCIDENT INVOLVING AN ATC REQUEST FOR A COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT TO FLY NEAR A NON-RESPONSIVE AIRPLANE

************************************************** **********

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating an incident involving a Southwest Airlines airplane that was requested to veer off course by Air Traffic Control to view into the cockpit of a general aviation airplane that had been out of radio communication.

On Sunday, March 27, 2011, Southwest Airlines flight 821 was requested by Central Florida Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) to check on a Cirrus SR22 that had been out of radio contact for an hour. The TRACON vectored the Southwest Airlines commercial flight until visual contact was obtained with the Cirrus.

Seriously, it's like when someone throws that joke out there for the billionth time, they think that they are beaing clever and funny when in reality it is just people being lemmings.

After reading your statement i almost retracted the flaps in flare..

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

I have to say despite my feeling that these descriptions are too vague to pass judgement, I can't help but feel a little enjoyment with the fact it is another Supervisor screwing up. I know my mom told me that was wrong too.

Dude i feel the same way, too bad the pilots are getting sucked into this the SWA guys are really great to work with.

7110: 2-1-2

He broke like the second rule in the book lol

well you part right, there is a rule in the 7110 (cant remember where) that says when providing visual seperation you must be able to communicate with both aircraft either directly or through another controller if the second aircraft is not on your freq , to advise the 2nd aircraft of the aircraft maintaining visual seperation from it. so you cant from an ATC point of view have an IFR aircraft maintain visual sept from a NORDO IFR aircraft.

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

I'm not sure how close you have to get for it to be considered "Formation Flying", but 91.111 specifically prohibits doing it while carrying passengers for hire.

Sec. 91.111

Operating near other aircraft.

(a) No person may operate an aircraft so close to another aircraft as to create a collision hazard.
(b) No person may operate an aircraft in formation flight except by arrangement with the pilot in command of each aircraft in the formation.
(c) No person may operate an aircraft, carrying passengers for hire, in formation flight.

Haven't seen Top Gun yet. Not a big movie watcher :(

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

Although I did just watch Pushing Tin the other night. Figured I'd see how Hollywood would depict my job to be :laff:

Evidently I'm going to grow up to be a big jerk who has sex with other controllers wives. What a life!

Re: NTSB investigating ATC request Southwest to intercept Ci

To participate in aviation, the following movies are required viewing:

Topgun
Airplane I and II
The High and The Mighty
12 O'Clock High
The Flying Tigers
(Basically any John Wayne flying WWII movie)

Airplane 1 and 2 are the best. Well 2 has nothing on 1 but still.
