Now an expat in India

Haven't posted for a long time, especially about being an expat. That's because my last permanent overseas gig ended in 2009! But now I am back in Asia again. Living someplace in India that even most Indians don't know where it is located: Gondia.

I was one of the original group who encouraged Doug to list a special section for expats. Now I am back to living that expat dream.

I would be glad to hear from anyone based in India. I do get to New Delhi quite a bit.

Before anyone asks, I am unfortunately the only foreigner at the flight school where I am based. Maybe we can change that at some time in the future but those who have worked with the DGCA in India know about how slowly things change here.

Glad you are on this website.
How's the aviation industry over there? Are they keeping you busy at the flight school?

Flight training in India is quite challenging. Some airlines in India are doing well, others not. A likely future market for Indian pilots will be airlines in the gulf states. Our school is busy and looks like it will get busier in the future.

What's your lifestyle like there? How are you entertaining yourself when not flying? What's the culture like for you as an expat? Are you learning any of the local dialects?

Interested in stuff like that.

How are the rumors that they are finally getting rid of all the expat pilots in 2015 panning through? Flight instructing in India...good luck. With the 40+ Indian pilots I flew with during my time there as a check airman, the ones that trained in country were the worse, but most of them just paid for their license. I'm also looking to get back there sometime in the near future on my new type, we shall see if it happens. I know though as soon as I do I'll be kicking my own ass for doing it. Have fun.

Why the rush to get back to India? I've been all over there and wasnt really impressed (Agra, Shrinagar, and Cochin)

Just great money with a very low cost of living. I was based in Chennai before which is a much different part of India. Not as bad as central/northern india.

Gondia, where I live, is in Central India off the beaten path. I decided to get my motorcycle license before I came to India so I could buy a bike and get around. I bought a 125 cc bike new (Hero Super Splendor - used to be affiliated with Honda) for less than $1000 USD with 18 months free service. Have taken a couple of forays into the villages surrounding Gondia. Will eventually visit some of the wild life resorts in the area in search of seeing a tiger in the wild. I believe we provide the best ab initio pilot training in India. Every student completes every hour here and all the solo flights are actually flown solo.

CAE by chance?

Born in India, moved the US when I was 10 and would love to go back and live there for 5-10 years and move back. Just wished I held on to my Indian citizenship so I could fly there. Quiet sure with duel citizenship I couldn't do that.
