The other day I was skimming through an old online aviation article and happened to come upon a mention of class II notams. I don't know if my eyes were playing tricks with me as I've never heard of a class II notam, so I was just curious if any of our long time instructors have heard of a class II notam?

Seems to be an obsolete term that has been slowly disappearing from FAA publications. You used to see them on knowledge tests long after they departed from pilot training material. According to NOTICES TO AIRMEN - FAA-P-8740-54, which was last updated in 1991:

Until they are published in the biweekly booklet, FDC NOTAMs are automatically included in the standard briefing given by an FSS briefer, as are NOTAMs(D).
In any of the other briefings offered by an FSS (abbreviated, outlook, or inflight) the pilot must request NOTAMs. Unpublished NOTAMs obtained from an FSS are also called Class I NOTAMs.
Published NOTAMs, also called Class II NOTAMs, are deleted from the data base after publication and may no longer be accessible to FSS briefers. Conditions permitting, a briefer may be able to locate a specific published NOTAM requested by a pilot.

Class II NOTAM's are printed NOTAMS. They are used for information that is meant to be effective for a long period of time. From what I understand they have been phased out, and cannot pinpoint a time when they were "phased in".

They contain info used in FDC NOTAMS, NOTAM-L, and D.

They were. Actually IIRC Notam D's went away too. They're now just NOTAMs which are then broken down into what they apply to (there's a list of 10 categories but don't remember them right now and too lazy to go look up).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, my IIRC from my above post was wrong. the "L" notams got canned and reclassified into the already-existent "D" notams which now include a keyword to specify what it affects.

The whole NOTAM system is a charlie fox.

It doesn't need to be complicated, folks.

I guess that's what happens when you have multiple government and private agencies all working together on something that's safety-critical. Getting rid of "L" NOTAMS was a step in the right direction, though.
 
Does anyone have a document that explains the changes to NOTAMs? Specifically one that gives the differences between FDC/D NOTAMs that has been updated for the recent changes.
