Not sure it's a good idea

5 guys, In-N-Out, honestly, really overrated.

They're ok, more like "Fast food, but not absolute garbage"

Shake Shack.

And Whataburger is just the worst.

We got a shake shack in VA Beach right before I moved, and it was pretty damn good. For those in the PNW, Burgerville is a decent joint as well. Agreed about whataburger.....that was just drunken food when I lived in TX

I don't eat burgers very often, much less burgers that I don't grill myself. But I'd say I'm equally happy with In N Out or Five Guys.......they are different, but at the end of the day, it is still just a greasy gut bomb going down my gullet. Five Guys does have hot sauce and jalapeño topping options though, which IMO, edges the needle ever so slightly in their direction.

Can’t beat a bag of Dick’s!

I don’t get how anyone thinks Whataburger ranks up there. I’d rather eat a Wendy’s burger.

Hey, wait. A double with cheese from a well run Wendy’s (they do exist, believe it or not…inexplicably the one on the B concourse in DTW is one) is a darn tasty burger.

In-n-Out is “ok”. It’s not wait 45 minutes in line with 300 of your new besties “ok”. The ones like the one next to LAX are just stupid. I think people use it as an excuse to ditch work.

I’m not into the whole “we’re so cool only the true burgerheads know what’s on our super secret menu”. That’s just a dick move.

My wife apparently lived near a well run Wendy’s and swears by it, so we try our local one here every year or so…it’s always empty but still inexplicably takes 25mins to get food. We’re pretty sure it’s a money laundering front.

This is true. We’re getting one in our suburb north of Houston, and I’m just hoping people will see them as invading Californians trying to draw market share from whataburger and shun them.

Yeah that’s kind of annoying. But probably brilliant from a marketing perspective.

Actually, there are a couple places ‘round here that certainly fit that description, but in the final analysis, if the foods good, I could care less.

I think what most people miss when comparing In-N-Out to other burgers is the price point, their premium burger is a Double Double and a combo including fries and a drink is under $7.00. That's all fresh, never frozen (except for shakes) meat and vegetables or other ingredients. It's not comparable to Five Guys, Whataburger, The Habit or Shake Shack. It is comparable to Hardee's/Carl's Jr, McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's or Jack in the Box but it's a higher quality meal.
There are also a lot of people that appreciate the fact that regardless how large they've become they're still family owned to try and maintain control of the quality of the product. The reason why they aren't nationwide is because they won't open a store more than a certain distance from there wholly owned distribution centers because they want to make sure their wholly owned transportation can reliably ensure each store gets fresh ingredients every day, there are no freezers (other than for shakes) at In-N-Out. They pay their employees more than average for any comparable job and the service you receive shows it, in 40 years of going there I've never had a bad experience regarding the employees or the product. If bible verses bother you I suspect that's why they're on the inside of the rim of the bottom of the cup, just set it down and it's not hard to ignore. I am a die hard In-N-Out fan, I have at least a dozen of the T-shirts from over the decades. I'm also a fan of the Lakers and the Dodgers but I have zero gear for either team. I'll send T-shirts to people on the east coast and it seems as if they consider them some sort of treasure. I understand that it seems as if the food doesn't live up to the hype these days and people that try it for the first time might be underwhelmed, but I'll say it again, In-N-Out wasn't, isn't and will never try to pander to hipsters or foodies. It's just a very basic burger concieved in the '40s that hasn't changed much. For many people who grew up in Southern California it's always been "The Little Train That Could", regardless of whatever nonsense any other fast food place was attempting you knew In-N-Out would always be the same. I think In-N-Outs popularity inspired a bunch of people to open the rash of retro '50s diner style restaurants we saw in the '90s, remember Johnny Rockets? They're all gone and In-N-Out is still plugging along serving fresh food with a smile at a reasonable price while slowly expanding. The food is not the only reason why a lot of old farts like me defend them so vehemently.
Sorry for the long post.

It’s not, though. Most of those burgers taste better.

Yeah, it’s kinda hard to ignore. Business and religion should not mix. It’s not a deal breaker for me (after all, I’m a CFA fan), but since it’s a mediocre burger to begin with, I don’t really see reason to give them a pass.

Eh. Maybe I’ll give it a pass. I am faithful to Publix. Started in Florida and is the largest employee owned company in the country. They were closed on Sundays until the 80’s, run a clean, high quality store, and will take your groceries to your car.

My only true complaint about them is their deli counter. Sandwiches are an after thought, and while yummy, no matter which Publix you go to, their deli counter is rigged for a maximum of 3 sandwiches per hour.

A Big Mac or a Jumbo Jack tastes better? One of the previous owners added the scripts because of his personal faith, the family chose to keep it after his death. It's a private company, there is no stockholders to answer to, if you're offended go eat a Big Mac. Not sure why you'd even chime in, there are no stores in Georgia or Florida, unless you just want to crap on something in your usual condescending manner. Many may think you've changed but you're still the same.

I don't get how anything thinks Shake Shack ranks up there. Expensive, tiny, mediocre burger. Nice bread though.

Ironically the first time I had Shake Shack I was put off since the bun was still basically dough when I bit into it.
