That honestly probably is Jet A. That looks like a non-structural access panel for the fuel tank - the fastener pattern is offset from the edge of the access panel and probably clamps onto another matching one on the back side rather than through the wing skin (this keeps the panel from loading up with the same shear stress as the surrounding wing skin). The black stuff is polysulfide fuel sealant, which creates a gasket between the wing skin and the two access doors.

NWA used to have the oldest fleet age average. Does Delta hold that torch now? Even after getting rid of the NWA DC-9s? And their 757-200s and 767-200/non-ER 300s to my home airport? Or does AA hold the title?

Everyone's fleet is changing so hard to say. Here is DAL's projected arrivals with the 747s disappearing and possible reduction in the MD-88 fleet:

Nothing "possible" about it. 13 will be gone by the end of 2017 and the rest by 2020. The 90s remain through 2025. This is all driven by mandated equipment upgrades, namely ADS-B.

I believe AA has the youngest fleet of the legacies now. Tons of new 737s, 319/21s, 787s and 777s in the last few years.

That's what $22 bil in debt can get you.

It was needed though. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those MD80s are older than some of the FOs flying them.
