Non revving to HNL

I was planning on using a buddy pass to non rev MSP-HNL in mid september. How difficult is it to get on these flights? Should I just suck it up and pay for a ticket? I wouldn't mind going through LAX, but I imagine most of the LA flights are pretty packed going on to HNL...

In the year I've spent cruising this site, I've learned lots of important things.... however one in particular sticks out in my mind....

"Friends don't let friends fly on Buddy Passes"

MSP, ATL, DFW, HOU non-stops to HNL are about 80% of the time a nightmare to nonrev on year around. The only one that I know is usually wide open is the CLT-HNL flight on USAir. Do your buddy passes work for multiple legs at the same price (MSP-LAX-HNL)? Might take longer, but chances of getting a seat are probably better.

And CLT-HNL is going away in September.
Don't use a buddy pass. They are not worth the paper they are printed on. At least if you are an employee or dependent of one you have a fighting chance.

It has been my experience that nonrevving TO HNL is not a problem.

It's getting off the island that's a problem. Buy a durn ticket.

I got business class round trip out of MSP last time I went.

Check the loads and see what your odds are. Often times one of the west coast flights on the 757-300s is wide open -- from HNL you can go to SEA, PDX, SFO, and LAX in addition to ATL on the A-330 which is not weight restricted eastbound.

Thanks for the info. I wouldn't mind doing HNL-LAX/SFO etc -MSP...I noticed Delta has the 76 occasionally on the HNL-LAX route as well as LAX-MSP so that may be an option.

HNL is either hit or miss. Flights are either oversold or have 100+ open seats. Everytime I pull up a UA flight to KOA, HNL, LIH, or OGG, it falls into these 2 categories with very few exceptions.

When I was coming back from HNL 2 months ago, the flight was overbooked by 10 with about 55 nonrevs...didn't look so hot.

Just buy I ticket... I want to hang out with you there! There is no way your gonna be able to ever go to HNL and beat our $650 roundtrip including 5 nights hotel for the group. Oh and if I recall correctly you were worried about missing classes...well what happens if you get stuck in HNL for an extra 3 days? Just buy a ticket bud! Oh and you have until 8am on Monday to decide ;-)

When I flew MSP-HNL as a revenue passenger in September of 2007, it was basically the non-rev express. But as was said, the problem with non-reving to Hawaii is getting back.

I just got back from HNL. I got first class both ways and there was around 90 open seats both ways. It is hard to predict what the flight loads are going to be this far out.
