Non-Rev Travel Check In Question

A buddy of mine was non-rev in the back on his commute home. He paid for the non-rev privileges and all is legit there. The flight was on another regional and the first officer had some words with him after the flight. The FO was upset that he didn't check in, and said it was a professional courtesy to do so. He was under the impression that he did not need to check in when using non-rev benefits.

Is there a consensus among airline pilots here for checking in or not when non-reving?

I have heard the, "don't bother me with checking in if you are non-rev". I have also now heard the "it's a professional courtesy". Which one????

It would drive me nuts if every non-rev in uniform/ deadhead checked in up front. Its bad enough when you can't get through a damn checklist because the FA's/ rampers/ gate agents interrupt you.

Oh good lord, ain't THAT the truth.

Better still, in some airplanes, the flight attendants butt is actually wedged between the hanging jumpseat and the opposite wall, like a cork in wine bottle, so that they can make the welcome aboard announcements right there without blocking the stream of incoming passengers.

"Well we've got 30.23 on the altimeter, still going south and expecting 21R. Abnormals as previously briefed, and I'm looking at the 10-8 taxi routes page here, the Blue 7 route and I'll have that up for the way out to runway 21R, and if they give us LADIES AND GENTLEMEN PLEASE ONCE AGAIN PLACE YOUR LUGGAGE WHEELS OR HANDLES FIRST, THAT WAY WE CAN ACCOMODATE ALL OF THE ROLLERBOARDS [sic] OF THOSE PASSENGERS BOARDING BEHIND YOU. PLEASE STEP OUT OF THE AISLE TO MAKE ROOM FOR PASSENGERS BEHIND YOU. WE HAVE A VERY FULL FLIGHT TODAY. ...and I've got the 280 knots in a speed edit for after ten thousand in the perf climb page for the LADIES AND GENTLEMEN IF YOUR'E JUST JOINING US IT WOULD HELP US OUT GREATLY IF YOU COULD STEP OUT OF THE AISLE ONCE YOU REACH YOUR ASSIGNED ROW AND THAT WILL HELP US HAVE AN ON TIME DEPARTURE. WE HAVE A VERY FULL FLIGHT TODAY. FLYING TIME TO NEWARK IS FIFTY SEVEN MINUTES, THAT'S WHEELS UP TO WHEELS DOWN. ...and I'll probably call for vertical speed 1000fpm to mitigate that. Any questions?"

. Non rev or DH you don't need to check in. I always thank the crew for the ride once I get off though but won't interrupt them in the middle of their stuff just to say I'm non revving. 99.9% of them don't care. Looks like your friend found the 0.1% that care.

Pretty sure I've shared the story but I've had a CA who called up an entire set of 3 DHing FAs (who were already seated in the back) to come up and checkin/say hi to him, telling them it's a good idea to check in when they DH every time. They were new. I told him (politely of course) there's no requirement for a DH or nonrev to check in with the CA, but he didn't think so.

Did he not realize that a hub to hub flight could have 20+ nonrevs and deadheaders on it? Does he want to hear 20 people say hi on every flight?

I've had that because some doofus put a deadheader on BLAST about not checking in.

If you're on the paperwork as a jumpseating FA or Pilot, as per our jumpseat policy, come say hi. If you're not on the paperwork, or deadheading have a coke and a smile and turn right after entering. Unless I get that sweet sweet 330 captain bid then it's left, forward, slightly right and then forward again. :)

I really don't care either way, but I just want to keep it consistent as per the policy so there's no "Well, the last captain yadda yadda yadda".

The challenge is that a lot of captains don't have a feedback loop about how much of an ass they're being. I occasionally find myself asking the FO, "Hey man, am I doing anything weird you haven't seen before" once we're deep into the trip and we've got some trust built up! :)

Maybe I'm spoiled, but my #1 is the CA not doing a walkaround ever. I understand if it's rainy/snowy/bad wx to have the FO always walkaround. When I upgrade, I've already sworn to myself I will walkaround on every leg the FO is PF. Even worse is when you've already done the walkaround and the guy hasn't done anything inside the cockpit. Paperwork still on center console, not reviewed it, just busy on his iPhone texting away. Once I get everything set up and then ~25 prior to push, finally takes the paperwork. "Oh we're only landing with 5.5 , can you go out and tell the fueler to add another thousand?" Really dude, now? NOW?

Also the same guy who never has any singles when it comes to tipping so he'll "get em next time."

If only more captains have a crap, the world would be a better place.

Funny, I get that too. It's usually after I do something or ask them to do something. I get the "deer in the headlights" look and a "Ummm, OK." This leads to the convo where they explain, "Usually, the captains make all the PAs," or " The captains always fill out the logbook."

Last FO I flew with, going to upgrade, never flew as captain at his regional. We had a MX issue that required a call through ATL Radio and coordination with the dispatcher and MTC. Made him do it all. It was an eye opener for him and a good learning experience that he appreciated. It they don't learn it as an FO, when are they supposed to?

I think a lot of guys really don't have the heart of a teacher, or they're simply too afraid to be thought of as "uncool" if they delegate some things to the copilot.

I had the second FO on the 330 once tell me that he's the senior FO and he doesn't do walk arounds, it's for the junior FO. I couldn't get "BITCH, PLEASE" out of my mouth fast enough. But I do feel for every crappy captain is a collection of indifferent FO's. For ever indifferent FO, there is a collection of passive captains that let that crap become normalized.

I always figure Leave It Better Than You Found It.
